Greetings Wildcat Families!

Happy Friday!



We hope you had a wonderful week and that you are ready for Spring Break! School will be closed from March 29-April 2, and classes will resume on Monday, April 5. Our Classic students will return to campus on Monday, April 5, and will attend 5 days in person following the RMS Classic Bell Schedule. Our Virtual students will continue to attend their virtual classes following the RMS Virtual Bell Schedule. Please read through all of the updates and announcements in our Wildcat Weekly so that you are prepared for the week we return from Spring Break.


I know so many of us are filled with new hope as more of our community is getting access to vaccinations and COVID cases continue to decline in our region. I sincerely hope everyone has a safe and relaxing Spring Break and that we continue on this positive path. Thank you for the collaboration and support! We are so grateful for our Wildcat community!

RMS Academic Achievement Awards

We are so excited to see how many of our Wildcats achieved academic excellence this past semester, even in the toughest of circumstances! We are recognizing their efforts by presenting them with certificates sharing their achievements! Here are the designations for academic awards:


Academic Excellence- students who receive a 4.0 GPA

Academic Achievement- students who receive a 3.8-3.99 GPA

Academic Recognition- students who receive a 3.2-3.79 GPA


We will be delivering certificates to Classic students on Wednesday, April 7, in their classes, and we will have a special drive-thru pick up for Virtual Students (with a photo opportunity with PAWS the Wildcat) on Wednesday, April 7, from 4:00-5:00 pm. Classic students are welcome to drive thru for a photo op as well! Great job to all our deserving and hard-working Wildcats!

School ID and Picture Orders

Students in the Classic learning model will get their school ID's during 8th period on Monday, April 5th 2021.


If your student is in the Virtual learning model, please call the office to schedule an appointment to pick up your student's ID.

7th and 8th Grade Science: CHYA Curriculum

7th and 8th grade science classes will be starting the California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA) Health curriculum in June. A copy of the informational letter that was shared by 7th and 8th grade science teachers and emailed to 7th and 8th grade families regarding the Health curriculum is attached here again for your review:CHYA Health Letter Eng 2-21 CHYA Health Letter Spa 20-21, along with a description of the CHYA curriculum: CHYA Curriculum Information Parents and guardians can examine written educational materials used in comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention instruction at the Vista Unified School District Office (1234 Arcadia Avenue, Vista, CA 92084) or may request a copy of the California Healthy Youth Act (California Education Code Sections 51930-51939) by contacting the district office. If you have any questions, please contact your child's science teacher.

6th and 7th Grade Course Selection:

Your student received instructions for how to select their essentials(elective) courses for next school year. This information was given through your student's History teacher. Your student will have until this Sunday, April 4th, to submit their essentials selection form. The google form is available for students through their history class in Canvas. High School Registration

Hello 8th grade families! Spring break is upon us. This is the perfect time to fill out your course selection sheets! The sheet is only a tool. In order to actually SELECT your courses you must log into your STUDENT PORTAL (not parent) during the open window (April 2nd-April 14th). NEW DATES for Student-Led Conferences

In order to give teachers and students more time to adjust to changes in schedules and to allow them to better prepare authentic goals and reflections, we have postponed our conferences until April. Our conferences were originally scheduled for March 18th and 19th. They have now been rescheduled for Thursday, April 15th and Thursday, April 22nd. Both of these days will be minimum days, so please mark your calendars. We will be communicating details for scheduling conferences during these minimum days after we return from Spring Break.


WHAT ARE STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES?

A student-led conference is similar to a parent teacher conference, however the student is present and in charge of leading the conference. Students will lead their teacher/parents/guardians through a reflective presentation, and then the team will engage in a conversation about the student's academic/social progress and needs.


Student-led conferences allow students to have ownership in the conversation about their strengths, their goals, and their needs. They are also a great opportunity for the team to discuss how the teacher and parents/guardians can help the student succeed. Student-led conferences encourage students to think critically about their own abilities and achievements, and help students develop skills they’ll use long after they’ve finished school. Student-led conferences will be held virtually through Zoom, and interpretation will be available. For students of families who are unable to attend student-led conferences, students will have the option of presenting to their parents/guardians at home and submitting proof of their student-led conference to their teachers.

Rainy Day Update

As Dr. Doyle announced in tonight's Community Update, middle and high schools will no longer shift to a rainy day minimum day moving forward. Classic students will be eating in shifts in covered areas 6 ft apart from one another. We are adding temporary coverings when needed to keep students covered during lunchtime while they are eating, and we will be utilizing the MPR when students are finished eating. We recommend students bring umbrellas and jackets on rainy days, as we have limited awning space around campus.

VUSD After School Education and Safety (ASES)

ASES will no longer be operating virtually instead, we will be providing an in-person program starting on April 5th. We will resume our normal days (Monday-Friday) from 3:08-6:08 p.m. If your son or daughter will no longer be participating in ASES or you are interested in enrolling your child, please contact Ms. Christine at (760) 685-2386 or email christineramirez@vistausd.org

CLASSIC Return- 5 Days Per Week

CLASSIC Schedule for Roosevelt Middle School (Starting 4.5.21)


Our gates open at 7:30 am. Breakfast is available for all students. Our 6th graders will enter through the gate by H13 (signage will be posted) and our 7th and 8th graders will enter through our main gate into the lunch area. Students will be directed to line up by their first period classes by 8:20 am.


Please remember it is crucial our entire RMS community to follow clear expectations so that we can return as safely as possible. These expectations will include procedures and requirements for...


  • masks

  • individual student plastic dividers

  • arrival and dismissal

  • one directional hallways during passing periods and lunch

  • social distancing inside and outside of the classroom

  • lunch procedures

  • bringing their charged Chromebook and personal supplies every day

  • practicing safe hygiene, including washing hands frequently and using hand sanitizer when entering classrooms

  • daily health screening of your student


Students who live two miles away or more from the school, may apply for school bus transportation. Please call or email Marcos Chavira at 760-726-2170 ext. 92804 or marcoschavira@vistausd.org. Please allow a two week period to review your application to see if it can be approved depending on the route of your home address.


We will need our families to be partners in these efforts to keep everyone safe by reinforcing these requirements and by ensuring that if students are showing ANY symptoms of COVID-19, they must not come to school. Please see the detailed information on the COVID-19 Decision Tree to help you screen for symptoms and see what to do if there has been confirmed exposure to or a confirmed case of COVID-19.

Cameras On!

Thank you for helping us to communicate the importance of engagement in our virtual classes. We have seen an improvement already in cameras on and communication in the chat! Again, we want to share a collective message that our expectation is that all students participate actively in their Zoom classes. Some examples of actively participating are the following:


  • Turn your cameras on during specific portions of the lesson as determined by the teacher.
  • Respond verbally or in writing when prompted.
  • Utilize the Chat feature appropriately to communicate with teachers and peers.

It is crucial that cameras are on and that students are actively participating in class in order to support engagement, community-building, and motivation for learning. We need your support as parents/guardians to stress the importance of these expectations with our Wildcats. Students who have particular issues having their cameras on should reach out to their teachers.

Hapara News

Exciting news! We are pleased to announce that a very helpful tool called Hapara is now working with our Canvas and is once again available for our teachers. Hapara is an important tool to assist teachers with digital citizenship and classroom management. This tool allows teachers to monitor what students are accessing during class on their Chromebooks. We will be supporting our teachers in setting it up for their classes, and we wanted our parents to be aware of this tool and what it does. We have attached letters that detail the privacy policy and how we are adhering to the ethical monitoring policy for this instructional tool. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Library Appointments

Classic Students: If you have library books checked out, and they are due while school remains virtual, have no fear! You will not be charged overdue fines. Please keep your library books until we are back on campus. In the meantime, you can sign up for a time to visit the library, browse the shelves, and grab a book! With district guidelines for safety in place, please sign up for a time to visit the library using this link, and please wear a mask.

Health Office:

The Health Office would like to remind SIXTH GRADE parents/guardians that the T-dap vaccine is required for all students entering the 7th grade. ALL students are required to have 2 Varicella vaccines. Notifications have been mailed to parents/guardians of students missing these vaccines. Attendance

Attendance is key to student success! Please encourage your student to sign on to virtual learning every day and on time. Teachers are required by Senate Bill 98 to take attendance every period, every day.


Students are considered "present" if they log in to their scheduled Live Zoom meetings each day (synchronous) AND if they log on and complete any work during their Learning Options & Work Time (asynchronous) periods.

If students complete work early in a Learning Options & Work Time period, they can log in early for a different period and continue independently with their work in that class. The intention is for each student to log in to each of their classes every day and make progress on their classwork.

New Attendance Codes:

A = absent

1 = present for a live Zoom meeting

2 = present for an asynchronous period (by logging into the class on Canvas and working on classwork)

Remember, absences must be cleared within 72 hours (3 school days) after the student returns to school. If your student was accidentally marked absent or if you are planning a trip in which your student will miss 5 or more school days, please notify the attendance two weeks in advance to set up an independent study contract.
