Summary
The books starts off by telling you the reader that Arnold lives on the Spokane Indian reservation. Arnold was born with cerebral spinal fluid which means water on the brain. Arnold is bullied by everyone in the reservation but his best friend Rowdy. Arnold decides to leave the reservation to get a better education and goes to an all-white school. Everyone at the reservation disowned him even his best friend. Arnold has a hard time fitting in at the all-white school the people on the reservation call him an apple "The people at home," I said. "A lot of them call me an apple." "They call me an apple because they think I'm red on the outside and white on the inside." (18 22). Even though everyone is making fun of him he still stays strong through it all. Arnold and his family are very poor they don't have that much money and sometimes his dad forgets him at school so he has to hich-hike home.Arnold doesn't like anyone to know that he is poor so he hides it very well. Arnold has a crush on a girl named Penelope but his does not like him. When she asks Arnold to go to a dinner with her and her friends he agrees but he does not have the money to go. Penelope's friend and Arnold go to the bathroom and he opens up and tells him that he has no money so he gives him money so he can pay for his food.
