The Legend
A Greek legend tells that God sifted the earth through a strainer while making the world. He made one country after another with the good soil that sifted through, and threw away the stones left in the strainer. According to the legend, these stones became Greece.

Geography
The land was, like the legend tells, very rocky and mountainous. Because of their rocky, dry, and un-fertile soil they couldn't really farm as many things as the people from Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
When they were left with no food, they started to search the ocean, discovering many things about how to navigate the stars and build ships. They were also traders and that was another source of their food. They traded many things
such as olive oil, wine, metal work and pottery. They had a very great range of people to trade with like Sicily, Arabia, Egypt and Carthage. They also received a large variety of mainly food such as pork, cheese and even glass and perfumes.

The Mountains
The mountains that spread across Ancient Greece had separated all the civilization, and amazingly they had never been a united country. The Mountains had blocked the civilization making it hard to communicate, this led them all to believe that they were all supposed to fight to find the winner of the land. This caused a lot of warfare between these civilizations such as Sparta and Athens.

The Sea
The Greeks had to rely on themselves for food when they could only grow so much. After learning the craft of making ships, they had to learn how navigate their way without maps, so they rarely traveled more than about 85 miles to reach the coast line. The Aegean, Ionian and Black Sea were very important trade routes for the Greek also considering that they had very few natural resources.

Navigating The Ocean
When trading the Greeks had no maps so they had to use the sky. Also they believed that they would anger gods if they traveled at night and that it was far to dangerous. This caused them to travel in the day and drop the anchor at night.
