Volume 2, Issue 3 - Third Quarter of 2016-2017 School Year
Can you believe that three quarters of the school year is over??
Each part of the school year is different. But every time we get to this point in the year, everyone is well aware that we are quickly coming to the end. This last quarter coming up flies! We have a very busy end of the year over the next few months. With award ceremonies, AP exams and Regents Exams, as well as graduation, the year will be over before you know it and summer will be here! (I know it doesn't feel that way after last week's snow and ice, but it is coming!)
In talking with parents at the different events we have, I know that increased communication is something that we all want. Those conversations are what sparked the creation of this newsletter. But I, and I am sure all of you, would still like more communication to occur. So I am going to try and do so on my end. At the end of each week I will be creating a VLOG, or a video Log, that I will email out to each of you. In this video log I will try and highlight some of the things that have gone on during the week, as well as let you know of some up coming items. It is an opportunity for you to get a lot of information in one location quickly, I hope. The hard part will be that you have to look at me each week! :)
With each VLOG I will also be attaching a feedback/survey form that you can fill out. If there are things you would like to see or hear about, this will be your opportunity to let me know!
Hopefully with these two additions, the communication will be increase both ways and we can make New Hyde Park Memorial an even better place!
Thank you for all you do to help make New Hyde Park at great place!

English 9A Students Put Oedipus Rex on Trial
After reading the tragedy of Oedipus Rex by Greek playwright Sophocles, students in Mr. Andy Yen’s English 9A class developed and presented a mock trial to decide the titular character’s fate. The students were assigned specific roles and tasked to use both their questioning skills and understanding of rhetoric to create separate legal strategies. The argumentative focus was whether or not Oedipus was a victim of fate or guilty of his own choices and actions. Multiple witnesses in the form of characters from the play such as Tiresias and Creon were called to testify. In the end, the class jury deliberated and voted on the verdict of “not guilty,” placing the responsibility of all his tragic circumstances on fate itself.

SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT HAPPENINGS
Bringing Trench Warfare to life!
Mrs. Psaros’ 8th grade students participated in a trench warfare simulation at Tully Park last month. This reenactment was designed to give the students an idea of what life was like in the tenches during World War One. In this activity, students acted as soldiers on opposing sides of the war to simulate the life and combat conditions in the trenches along the Western Front. The students were instructed to enter “No Man’s Land” and get as close to the opposing side’s “trench.” Their mission was to capture an item and return it safely to their own “trench,” while simultaneously dodging flying “snowballs.” The “snowballs” represented the heavy artillery utilized throughout the war. Through this activity, students learned about war strategy, tactics, and weapons that were used during this time. This experience really brought Trench Warfare to life for these 8th graders.
