Beating the Odds

Lakeview Staff Newsletter - March 1

Thank you!

Conferences, report cards, SLO's, concert prep, art show ... 'tis the season. Thank you for your work during these busy weeks. When I am in conferences, one of the things I truly appreciate at Lakeview is how honest, yet supportive you are of families. I heard many success stories from teachers about conferences these last two days - thank you!

As we move into 3rd trimester, think flexibly. What are some things you've wanted to try with your class, but haven't been able to yet? What is something you'd really like to implement next year, but you could test/pilot it with your current group? Perhaps it's a tech tool to increase engage students, a new way to group students, physical changes to your classroom, etc. Go for it. If it doesn't work, that's ok. Please share what's working (or not ... because that's equally valuable) with me and other colleagues. Remember that getting better is almost always the result of consistent, small changes to practice.

Teacher AdvancED survey

A few weeks ago, everyone in the district did a longer AdvancED survey. This next, shorter survey is for homeroom teachers, special ed teachers, art, music, and PE teachers. Pupil services and coaches do not need to take this survey. A few things to know about this final survey:

• It is actually 2 surveys linked together, so you will answer some basic demographic questions at the beginning and again in the middle of the survey. It is not a mistake.

• As you answer these questions, your answers are specific to Lakeview.

• Please think carefully about each question. Here's an example question "I have ample resources (material, fiscal, and personnel) to assist me in meeting the needs of my students." Yes, we always would love more, but consider things like bookroom purchases. Sometimes I answer questions too fast when taking a survey.

• Take the survey by Wednesday, March 6. Thank you. Here is the link.

Welcome

Welcome to our new 4th/5th grade paraprofessional, Taquita Lehto. Ms. Lehto will start on Monday during the PD day, so you may meet her Monday. She will start with students at Lakeview on Tuesday. Ms. Lehto is a Blakewood parent and was a para in Cudahy. Welcome!

Structural Items

Summer School Recommendation List - spreadsheet by March 11.

If a student has 1 recommended class, it goes in the first cell (column F). Do not leave empty cells after the "Lakeview Elementary" cell or the form letters will not print correctly.

4th & 5th grade band/orchestra slips - 4/5 classroom teachers - please ask students if anyone has slips left to submit.

Family newsletter - No family newsletter this week.

Elementary Blackout Dates - Here is a link to the calendar

Google Expeditions

Many classes went on Google Expeditions this week. If you are interested in doing this in your own class, please do. Here is a spreadsheet with 920 expeditions. As you are finishing a unit, perhaps there is an Expedition for that. And even better, start an upcoming unit with an Expedition. How about a 3rd trimester science unit? All sorts of possibilities. [Tip: use Control+F or Command+F and search for a key word in the spreadsheet.]

Character Dares & Trauma Sensitive Schools

This one is good. I totally believe that clean, organized environments speak loudly to our students and families about our school.
