Chatfield Newsletter: January 9, 2023 - January 22, 2023
From the Directors
January brings exciting new academic challenges for our children. As the school year progresses the curriculum becomes more challenging and expectations begin to rise for each student. You can support your child's academic growth by providing a dedicated area and time each day to focus on learning. This includes making sure all unfinished work is completed and that your child takes time to read and practice math facts. As a reminder, every child should be reading at least 20 minutes a night. By the end of second grade, addition and subtraction facts should be memorized. By the end of fourth grade, all multiplication and division facts should be memorized. Setting time aside each evening for school includes a set time to go over your child's planner/progress and to prepare for the next school day.

There will be practice/Skill weeks and game weeks. They will alternate back and forth. The skill weeks will be run like a camp (by Mr. Boyle), but with smaller numbers and very focused instruction. We would like coaches/parents to help and be involved/assist on practice days as well. On game dates there will be no practice time before their games. Boys and girls in grades 1-2 will play on 8 foot baskets during the season (between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.) while those in grades 3-5 will play their games on regulation 10 foot baskets (between 11:30 and 1:30 p.m.).
Each game will consist of two 20 minute “running clock” halves while being officiated with volunteer officials trained by a licensed basketball official through the MHSAA.
**Returning for 2023--Depending on numbers I am considering separating boys and girls if possible. I am not sure how this will work, but I think it would be a better experience for all involved. However numbers may not allow me do this.**
The Chatfield Youth Basketball Program is a volunteer-based activity and will need help to allow the program to run smoothly each week. We expect all parents to have a vested interest in development of their child through this program. This includes helping with operating the scoreboard, concession stand workers, and the always important coaches. Please make checks payable to “The Chatfield School.” Questions may be directed to Mr. Boyle, Athletic Director at lboyle@chatfieldschool.org.

Weather-Related School Closures
It’s that time of year again when we must discuss school closings. As you know, the weather and roads can be an issue this time of year. We want you to know that we are always concerned about the safety of the students and parents.
We work with the superintendents from other local school districts and the Lapeer Intermediate School District as well as the Lapeer County Road Commission and law enforcement to determine the conditions around the county. If your local school district is closed that does not mean that Chatfield is closed.
The school directors will make the determination as early as possible and send out messages via:
Radio: WWJ 950, WJR 760, WMPC 1230
Television: Fox 2, Local 4, ABC 7, WWJTV CBS,
CW 50, ABC 12
Internet: www.chatfieldschool.org
Skylert School Messenger: Parents can adjust their contact preferences, E-mail, Text, Phone Call,by going into Skyward Family Access and clicking on the Skylert tab.
As a general rule of thumb Chatfield School does not have early release on days when the weather and roads become worse during the day. We will provide updates regarding the status of evening activities by posting them to the school website. Road conditions can vary around the county and on different surfaces so as always use your best judgement and safety when determining if you should drive to school. Safety is always our first priority.
