Letter from the Principal
Dear Families,
Several DC families have made us aware of some inappropriate anonymous Instagram accounts that are targeting several of our students. These accounts spread lies, inappropriate comments, etc. that are very hurtful to students and families. Unfortunately creating these types of cyberbullying accounts is not a new phenomenon, and school administrators have been dealing with this since Instagram started in 2010.
We have no tolerance for bullying, and when we are made aware, we immediately report these accounts to the social media host as well as begin an investigation. Please keep in mind that “no tolerance” only works if ALL of us have no tolerance in our community. We desperately need families and students to partner with us to stop bullying. We know that our students are often afraid to speak up, and we try to educate them on the importance of reporting bullying and all of the various ways that they can report it to us.
What can you do?
Please help us emphasize to your child: Do not follow anonymous Instagram accounts that cause harm, fear, or pain. Following them means that you are now associated with committing the same acts.
Also please emphasize to your child: Do not share your passwords with anyone except your parents. It is very common for students to share their passwords with a group of friends so that if they get their phone taken away, they can have a friend continue their “streaks.” We see student accounts hacked all the time due to this. If you have shared a password(s) already, change it now.
Parents and students, please do not take screenshots of inappropriate pages and repost them on your own social media accounts and/or other public forums. We totally understand that you are only trying to help identify the creators and get these accounts shut down, but this is actually fanning the flames. Further advertising these accounts only increases their popularity and views and thus causes additional pain for targeted students and families.
Instead of reposting, please talk to your child and see if they have any idea who could have created it. Have them talk to their friends. Please report the name of the account, any leads, and any evidence to your child’s school.
Encourage your child to capture screenshots of evidence on social media before it can be removed to aid in an investigation. We cannot issue consequences for cyberbullying based on hearsay.
Ways to report: Call, email, speak to us. Leave an anonymous note in our office and/or on a teacher’s desk. Voicemails can be left anonymously on our phones as well.
Deer Creek is transitioning to the STOPit app system to further assist our students in reporting bullying. Once our training is complete, we will send out information to all parents as well as train our students on how to use the STOPit system.
We highly recommend regularly (and at random times) checking your child’s phone. Students can sometimes make impulsive decisions with their phones that can lead to unsafe situations, and they need guidance from adults on how to properly manage their social media. Students that know their parents are monitoring closely and will search their phones at any time, often think twice before participating in inappropriate behaviors with their phones.
Ultimately a student that is engaging in bullying and targeting others needs help. They are hurting inside which is causing them to hurt others. We all need to stick together and support each other to stop bullying, not only so that we can issue consequences, but also so that we can render aid to all involved. True “no tolerance” takes all of us agreeing to no tolerance while training and supporting our kids together. Thank you for partnering with us!
Sincerely,
Mark Phillips

Grades moving to Infinite Campus
Our virtual teachers are moving grades from Edmentum to Infinite Campus. Infinite Campus is our official grade book and where student' grades are transcripted. This is also where we get our grade reports for eligibility each week. Part of online learning is being able to have the ability to work on courses in a self-paced environment. This does not however mean students can disregard their courses. Students should work to stay on pace with the target dates. There is no penalty for work done past the target dates; however, for eligibility purposes, teachers will enter zeros for assignments that are more than 5 days past the target dates. We have to have an accurate depiction of a student's current grade when running these reports. If zeros are entered, they can be replaced; and again, that will come with no deduction in points. Please continue to monitor your student's grades in Infinite Campus and Edmentum.

Deer Creek Communication Platform
Deer Creek School District is embarking on a new communication platform to include a Deer Creek App that is designed to enable parents, staff and students to stay informed and up-to-date on events, important issues, general information, emergency notifications and site based activities. The Deer Creek App will work conjointly with the SchoolMessenger App (registration only required one time) as a notification system. Once a parent has registered with the SchoolMessenger App, they will only need to use the Deer Creek App for all things Deer Creek!
