STUDENT ILLNESS
We know that with students being back in school, germs can spread and we are beginning to see students with illness.
Considering of all the changes over the past couple of years, we wanted to remind our families of the most recent procedure for a student illness. If a student is sick, they may return to school when they have been fever, vomiting, or diarrhea free for 24 hours without the use of medication.
Per school policy, a fever is 100.4 or higher. If a doctor writes a note with different instructions, the doctor's guidelines will be honored as a medical absence. There are no longer COVID absences. Students will need to have medical or parent excuses.
Also as a reminder, please note that parents are allowed to write up to 10 excuse notes per year for student absences. Above 10, a doctor's note must be sent to school in order to excuse an absence.
NEW TENNESSEE LITERACY LAW
New Retention Law Pamphlet: Your student should have received a pamphlet in his/her Friday folder on 8/19 (sent home with 3rd grade students on 8/12). Its purpose is to inform all families of laws that have been set by the Tennessee Department of Education. These laws, the TN Learning Loss Remediation and Student Acceleration Act and TN Literacy Success Act require school districts to identify K-3 learners not meeting reading expectations on benchmark and TCAP assessments. These students must be provided specific supports, parental notification, and be considered for retention in 3rd grade.
We ask that ALL families review the pamphlet thoroughly and reference it as the year unfolds. Suggestions: place it on the side of your refrigerator. It clearly outlines what your family needs to know for each grade level to which your child(ren) are assigned. We will be providing regular communication on your child's progress, including their progress in reading formally three times throughout the school year after our benchmark assessments. This communication will indicate whether or not your child falls into the three literacy level percentages outlined in the pamphlet. Please also note that our teachers will be communicating your child's reading progress regularly.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher, Mr. Oliver or Mrs. Bosco. A link to the brochure is below if you prefer to review it here.
