Mrs. Loppnow's News & Notes
Week of October 1, 2018
What a great week we have had! Thank you for all of the birthday wishes and sweet cards. I appreciate your thoughtfulness!
We are really getting into the "swing" of things here. It's a great time of year when the students are really settling into routines and are working hard to show their personal best. It is exciting to see the "wheels turning" and ideas starting to "click".
We do have one issue ("swing" was your hint!), and it is the same one that has swept the nation over the past year...the Floss. I KNOW you have seen your child doing it, and you may have even tried it yourself! Unfortunately the Floss and several other Fortnite "dances" are taking over some of our learning time. If you could please have conversations to support my classroom NO FLOSS ZONE, I would appreciate it. Recess time is a great time to practice the dances. Writing, reading, and math time are not. I appreciate your help!
As always, please feel free to contact me, at any time, with questions or concerns.
Have a great weekend!

The Floss...and others!
A Peek into this Week and Next!
Math: This week we focused on rounding, ordering, and comparing. To help "visualize" rounding, we use the idea of "Number Neighborhoods". For example, if I am rounding the number 62, the Number Neighborhood would be 60-70. We know that 62 is somewhere between those two numbers. Students listened to a rap to help remember the rules for rounding numbers. You can find it below in the Math Spotlight.
Social Studies: MAP SKILLS. To kick off our lessons on Mapping, the students learned about Compass Roses. They each practiced Cardinal and Intermediate directions by creating their own Compass Rose. I hope you enjoyed seeing the completed compass roses on our new SeeSaw site! Please let me know if you need help accessing your child's portfolio.
Reader's Workshop: This week our focus was on identifying the different characteristics of a Story, Drama, and Poem. Students identified how they are all similar and how they are different. They had opportunities to look at different texts and practiced naming the parts.
Next week we will read our first folktale from Junior Great Books titled, Ooka and the Honest Thief. Students will learn how to participate in a shared inquiry lesson and will tackle the question, "How can someone be an HONEST thief?"
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS!
Brixton and his family enjoyed a night out to see the broadway play, Hamilton!
Ellah enjoyed her birthday celebrations with pottery and TEAMWORK!
