Royal Library News
First Quarter 2018
What has happened at the library the past weeks?
Library activities
The first two weeks of school were incredibly busy. The library successfully deployed over 1,700 iPads and checked-out textbooks to all students. The remaining weeks have been devoted to library orientations. All students (7th and 8th grade) have participated in the program. Students learned about library use and rules, the library's website and contents, and information about our reading contest. In addition to this, all students practiced library skills by playing a breakout game. This game fosters the three c's: communication, collaboration and creativity.

There can also be a number of cross-curricular connections. For example:
1) Art Connection: students can explore the creation of history-themed visual displays that depict colonial life in the 1700's or visualize particular scenes from the novel and recreate those scenes in art work.
2) Social Science Connection: a) learn about colonial life in Philadelphia around 1793, b) learn about the economy and reasons why supplies were scarce in Philadelphia in 1793 c) research the connection between hot air balloons and Philadelphia
3) HPWB & General Science 1 Connection: Research other plagues that have been epidemic in the United States. What diseases are creating the most danger now? What can we do about them?
4) English Connection: students can create their own poetry based on the reading or even write an alternative ending to the story
5) Advisory Connection: students can use the library's green screen to edit professional videos with health advisory alerts that are historically themed and aired on KRDR
