Content: Students are engaged in a research project to finish out the school year. This week’s lessons focus on creating a Works Cited page using MLA format and developing the research paper. Teachers should guide students to an MLA online-resource found at
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ ,which will help students with MLA formatting for the research project. Students will end the week with Embedded Assessment 1, during which they will begin writing their research paper.
Assessments: There are no more assessments this year.

Content: Students are analyzing persuasive techniques in advertisements this week, as they continue the persuasion unit. Students will critically analyze how advertisements appeal to consumers in preparation for the Embedded Assessment that requires them to create their own advertisement. Students will have lots of opportunities to view examples of real-life advertisements, and discuss the effectiveness of the persuasive techniques used. This unit is designed to develop critical consumers, so teachers should push students to analyze the ads and look at why advertisers use the techniques that they do. Students should approach this study as a means of learning to be more aware of how they are convinced to buy products.
Assessments: There are no more assessments this year.
Webinar: For anyone interested in an overview of next year’s curriculum, as well as learning about opportunities for lesson writing over the summer, plan to attend the informational webinar on Wednesday, May 18th. All 7th grade ELA teachers received calendar invites with the bluejeans link.

8th Grade ELA
Content: Teacher feedback on student presentations and IOPs are this week's critical lessons/actions.
- During this time, students will conduct their Individual Oral Presentation, or IOP.
- Tip 1: As the teacher, print out an IOP rubric for every student and as they are presenting, score their presentations. Do not wait and score all presentations until the end of the day and/or period. This will cause you to feel overwhelmed with grading and make it difficult to recall a specific presentation when you have seen multiple back-to-back presentations.
- Tip 2: Do not be afraid to provide feedback at the end of the period to help students avoid some of the errors within the previous presentations. This will help the next presentations adjust to ensure a stronger score.
- Tip 3: Just like you provide feedback on what needs to be adjusted, provide feedback on specific elements of presentations that were done incredibly well. This will allow students to see how to adjust and/or incorporate specific actions into their upcoming presentation.
- Tip 4: While one student is presenting, their peers should be score the presenter based off of their understanding of the rubric. This will help all students remain engaged in the process and note what their peers are doing well and what they should incorporate into their own presentation to enhance their performance and score.
Assessments: Please note, there will not be any Bi-Weekly or Interim Assessments for Quarter 4.
- Rationale: The focus for this quarter is the MLA research paper and IOP. As a curriculum team, we wanted to place emphasis on these two critical components and did not want to add additional stress or take time from the scope and sequence. If you have any specific questions regarding assessments for Quarter 4, please contact George D. Galindo.
Webinar: The final ELA webinar of the 15-16 academic year is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18 from 4:00 pm to 4:45 pm.
- Note: This webinar is critical as your Course Leader will present the finalized detailed Long-Term Plan which includes the Year at a Glance and the Week at a Glance sections.
