Colonel Connect
The Official Newsletter of South Garland High School
Principal's Corner
I hope you all had some down-time with family and friends and were able to get outside and enjoy this beautiful weather last week! As I reflect on last week, specifically our time spent with students during intersession, I was totally mesmerized with all the energy and excitement our staff contributed towards making this initiative a success for our students. I want to personally thank all the families that supported our first intersession. As a result, our campus had the highest number of student participants of all schools. On one or two days, our numbers peaked a little over 500.
South Family, our continued commitment towards campus success has gained the attention and the support from many. They see the intentionality and importance of what we are trying to accomplish to improve student achievement at our school- purposeful calls to parents, multiple home visits, weekly newsletters, connecting through social media, and so much more. With all the work that we are putting in, there is much more that must be done as our record high failure rate has had minimal decreases since progress district wide.
As we move forward, I will be mandating a huge change for the second cycle. The change will be that all students, while participating remotely, will be required to have their cameras on during instruction. Our studies indicate that students who do not have their cameras on are not as engaged as the students who are participating with their cameras on. The study also indicated that two-thirds of failures consisted of students who are participating remotely. There are tools available to block or blur students’ background while having their cameras on during instruction. In addition, we will continue offering tutorials weekly. See Tutoring Schedule
We will be welcoming roughly 800 students to our campus for face to face learning this second cycle. As safety and security are always a priority, we will keep the same measures we have created in keeping our staff and students safe. We will continue to communicate any changes and/or updates about our systems, operation, and procedures.
Title I- Parent Meeting: October 14th (5pm-6pm) via Google Meets Live Stream
Each year, Title I programs are required to host a meeting for parents to explain what the Title I program is and how parents can become involved in the Title I program. In order to keep parents informed, schools must invite all parents of children participating in Title I Part A programs and encourage them to attend. In a schoolwide program, this means ALL parents should be invited and in attendance. The link will be shared on our website, email blasts, and twitter.
As always, please feel free to communicate your questions and/or concerns by filling out the form below.
South Family, please govern yourselves and actions accordingly and remember that joy always come in the morning!
I hope you all have a fantastic week!
