Return to in-person hybrid model moved to November 16
October 23, 2020
Dear Leyden Family,
Several weeks ago I shared a video with you outlining our Roadmap to Reopening plan. At that time, our local metrics related to the regional positivity rate and local spread of COVID-19 were declining and we were excited to move into our hybrid models and get kids back in our buildings. Since that announcement, unfortunately, we have seen those metrics trend in the wrong direction. Because of these trends, we are going to pause and adjust our plans. As always, your wellness and safety is our top priority.
Before I talk about what is changing, I’ll start with what is going to stay the same. We currently have our students in our Bridge, LIFE High School, Transition, and English Learner Level 1 programs back in school. Those programs will continue. We will also continue our Open Campus Plan where any student who needs a quiet place to work or high quality internet can come into school every day. Finally, we will maintain our daily service of high quality, fresh meals that are available every day at both high schools and at various locations throughout the community.
The rest of our students were scheduled to return beginning on November 2nd in our hybrid model. As we continue to watch those metrics, we are going to delay the return of our students two weeks until Monday, November 16. At that time, we will utilize our 50% hybrid model. Following our recent survey to parents, approximately 48% of families responding have elected to opt-out of in-person schooling in the hybrid model. Because of that, we are confident we can provide social distancing and a safe learning environment for our students immediately in our 50% hybrid model.
We are also going to delay the return of the rest of our faculty to the buildings. Originally, they were scheduled to come back next week. Instead, we will have our faculty return on Monday, November 2. This will give us two full weeks for faculty to adjust to being back in the building as we prepare for kids on November 16th. I would like to take this chance to thank our teachers who have been re-inventing their professional practice every day and working harder than ever this year. Wednesday, October 28th will still be used as a Remote Planning Day with no student attendance so that staff can take that time to prepare for our change to the hybrid model.
We are still waiting for updates from the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) about the upcoming Winter sports season. Our activities, clubs, and fine arts programs will proceed as planned for right now.
We will continue to monitor our local metrics related to this virus and that will always drive our decision-making. I will provide another update on Friday, November 6th as we look towards bringing our students back to school.
Thank you for your patience and your partnership as we navigate this strange school year together. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. Have a great day and a great weekend.
Dr. Nick Polyak
Superintendent

New Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up Locations at West Leyden
In an effort to improve the traffic flow during morning drop off time, we have created a new traffic flow and assigned new parking areas for students. This will go into effect once we have students return to the building. Please see below important information and an attached colorful map for a visual bonus.
- Entrance 11 will be now used as a parent drop off and pick up locations before and after school. This means that there will be a double "One-way" lane towards Entrance 11 to allow for traffic flow.
- Parents will exit through the back of the school by the tennis courts (otherwise known as the "cow pasture")
- Entrance 11 will only be open until 8:35 am once students return to the building. After this time, students will need to be dropped off at Entrance 2.
- Student parking will now be in the back behind the field house ("Blue" area on the map).
- No cars or drop-offs will be allowed in the South Drive (by Entrance 5). This is for Leyden bus traffic only.
- Entrance 10 will be used by busses for special education transport only.
