Did you know that 1 in 3 teens who are in a relationship have experienced some type of abusive behavior, whether it be mentally, physically, sexually or emotionally? Your WEST High STUCCO says the time is NOW and we need to do a LOVE REVOLUTION. We are super pumped that Starbucks and Hy-Vee has heard about this and decided to partner with us during this Awareness week.

We are working with Rachelle Rawson from the Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. She can be reached at Rachelle@csadv.org or phoned at 712-899-0920. Our West High Student Representative for this project is Rosario Chaclan. Rosario is a sophomore and has been the student leader on this from the get go. She has shown a tremendous amount of leadership and ambition throughout this project's timeline. She is going to after school meetings with Rachelle and I am sure this week will be a great week filled with activities for students and staff. Rachelle Rawson has agreed to be here on the 14th and 15th during homeroom if anyone needs additional support in their classroom or have students visit with. Please let me now if you have any questions.
Future Ready
Mentoring
Would you consider helping us get the right people as mentors? We are looking for applications now through the end of February. If you see students that are outgoing, can connect with their peers and can stand up for our strong bystander culture are encouraged to apply. Teachers are the best recommenders and we can really make a difference by encouraging those we see with this type of potential.
The application is pretty simple and students can fill this out online.
Here is the link: https://goo.gl/oPyGAT
We would love to get lots of applications so that we can cover sufficiently if students end up off campus first or second block.
Dress Code Clarification
- Hats
- Hoodies Up
- Blankets
- Onesies
If a student refuses to comply, please let an administrator know so we can follow up with the student after class,
Close Reading
This researched-based strategy is effective in all content areas. For the rest of this year, each teacher should invite an administrator in to watch a Close Reading lesson. We are collecting walk-through data around this strategy 6-12 across the District.
When you implement this strategy please send an invitation to April and/or your evaluator.
If you need more support in implementing this strategy, please reach out to Kristen or Tyson.
Consequences for Tardies
Students that do not serve lunch detention will be assigned to detention.
Please help us combat tardies and truancies by not allowing students to leave class without one pass for each student. Also, avoid sending students out of the room the first and last five minutes of class.
Conferences
Please share this website with your Homeroom students and their parents. The link will also go out in the school newsletter.
Dr. Gausman's Visit to West High
Message from Dr. Gausman:
Dear Staff Members of West High School –
This year, I am again scheduling time in your buildings where I can learn from you about what is going on in your building and in your departments. I will visit your school on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 3:15 p.m. in the Media Center. My visit is scheduled so that I may have some time with you after the school day for some informal conversation. As I visit with you this year, I simply look to learn what is going well in your building and departments, what challenges you face, and how I might better serve you as your Superintendent of Schools. Attendance for this visit is not required, but I certainly look forward to visiting with those of you who may be available.
Thank you for all that you do for our students.
Dr. Paul Gausman
