HS South EdTech Bulletin #2.12
Resources for Integrating Technology into Instruction

Summer Learning
The sun is shining. The breeze is blowing through your hair. The beach is calling. It’s the summer. The perfect time to relax, recharge, and learn something you’re passionate about: helping students achieve their goals! Summer is only 29 short school days away! While we hope attending the Summer 1:1 Learning Institute is part of your summer plan (teachers of 10th graders, we’re looking at you), it’s never too early to start testing out some of the tech that can support the instructional strategy themes of the institute.
Read on for a sneak peek of the summer institute instructional themes, some ideas you can implement now, and other awesome summer PD opportunities.
Student-centered learning
Why not try...
Hyperdoc
- Creating a hyperdoc, so students can self-direct their learning. Differentiate based on interest, where students can choose which path to take.
Non-traditional "portfolios"
- Non-traditional portfolios of student learning and reflection. Encourage students to reflect not only on their learning this year, but what skills they will apply next year.
- Let students show their creativity by creating a Google Drawing that shows growth across marking periods. Students can include links to digital work, memes or gifs to express emotion, audio notes, and written reflections.
Show what you know
Diversifying the ways students can show understanding. We get it, Google Slides is an easy go-to product to present information and show understanding. But, is it always the most effective? Challenge students to choose another option that better meets the needs of a specific audience.
Create a tutorial video using Screencastify. Design an infographic to show a theme or connect units. Create a “trailer” for a unit of study in an Adobe Spark video.
Digital Assessments
How can we create assessments that will both engage students and provide meaningful feedback for the teacher? Ask students to create review activities for the class. Not only can we formatively assess student understanding based on the content of their game, but we also have another student-centered activity!
Have the students make...
Games
Students design custom Kahoot games or Quizlet sets. After running a game in class, ask students to analyze the results of their game, and what they would do to address any areas of concern.
Videos
- Create a “student project” in EdPuzzle. Within EdPuzzle, students can find videos, add notes and ask questions. After viewing, challenge students to connect videos, or analyze ways they would change the videos to make them more effective.
Student feedback
- Students can work together to create a custom Google Form. Ask students to create a quiz and provide feedback on the different questions.
Teachers of 10th grade students!
Two-step registration process:
- "Apply" on Applitrack (so you get paid)
- Register on EventBrite for specifics days
But wait there’s more! Stay tuned for the next edition of the edtech bulletin where we will share information and ideas to support the remaining two summer institute themes: building your tech toolkit and creating your 21st century classroom.
Thought to Consider...
Trying out some of these ideas with students you are comfortable with now, can be easier than trying something new with a group of students in September. It can be intimidating, but at least there's not the added pressure of establishing yourself with a new group of students on top of trying a new tech-enhanced strategy. You got this!

Supporting teachers integrating technology into instruction
No matter what we do together, you are always in the driver’s seat. You identify the focus, you make the final decisions, the choices are up to you.
Discuss instructional goals; how can we meet the needs of all students?
Set short or long-term student-focused instructional goals
Develop an implementation plan and try out strategies in your class
Adapt and improve strategies based on needs of students and feedback from your classes
What types of instructional strategies could we discuss? Self-directed learning, student choice, collaboration, differentiation, learner-centered instruction, formative assessment, etc.
