This week will be another exciting week of instruction! We will continue in our Reader's Workshop by learning about things that good readers do. We are modeling and practicing in class, so that we can become experts. During Guided Reading, we will be introducing a new story. During this time, we will be reviewing nouns, context clues, and main idea. Word Study will be slightly different this week, as we begin preparing for our first spelling test this week! We will be doing a lot of practice in class, but it is also important for your student to complete his or her homework each night.

Just a reminder, during the first nine weeks we will all be using the same spelling word lists to help students better understand the expectations. After first nine weeks students will begin receiving varied lists to make word study more meaningful for them.

Sight Words: Each week the newsletter will contain a list of sight words for your child to practice. These words will be assessed along with the spelling test on Friday. PLEASE NOTE THAT STUDENTS DO NOT NEED TO BE ABLE TO SPELL SIGHT WORDS. At first students will simply copy the word from the word bank onto the line when the teacher calls it aloud. As we progress students will begin to place the words in appropriate sentences to ensure that they know what the word looks like and how it should be used.

This week we will be focusing strictly on the prewriting stage of the writing process. We will be reading looking at the book My Truck is Stuck! to see how the author of this story began his ideas. Later in the week, we will also be watching video from the author. Each of your students have very creative minds, and I can't wait to see these thoughts on paper!

This week, we will continue our review of counting to 120, as well as grouping objects into groups of ten. We are also working on naming 'one more' or 'one less' than a number.

The students have been doing a wonderful job working with addition facts! We will continue working with addition, and move onto number sentences to solve word problems.

Social Studies

During social studies this week, we will be learning about what a community is. The students will have an opportunity to discuss their ideas with their classmates, and even write a thank you letter to one of our school community helpers. This will be an exciting unit and I know they will enjoy it!
