NEW APP FOR PARENTS!
Onslow County School district shared a new mobile app in April 2016. This app simplifies and personalizes information that OCS parents, staff and community members can access on-the-go.
The app is part of SchoolMessenger, the school’s web host provider. It is available for download, and is free, at the App Store and at Google Play. The app pulls information from the district website, school sites and social media feeds in order to keep information current. Users have the ability to customize the app so they only see information for the schools they are interested in. Through the app you will also be able to access the Parent Portal, Student Portal, and alerts.
This is a great way for you to receive up to date information from your child’s school including the school menu, upcoming events and other information, and it can be downloaded free. The app aggregates messages and calendar dates from the district as well as selected schools, so you can now access both system and school information in one place. Parents with students in multiple schools can get the latest news from all locations in a single app.
THIRD GRADE NEWS
We are happy to welcome our students back from holiday break—we missed them! The start of a new year is a fantastic time to have valuable discussions about leadership. Our students have been contemplating questions like, How will you take charge of yourself, your learning, and your success this year? How will you make it a great year for you? How can you help to make it a great year for others? What goals do you have for 2017? How do you plan to accomplish them?
In ELA this month, third graders are learning about main idea and supporting details as well as literal and nonliteral language. The students will continue their study of division and measurement in mathematics. In social studies, third graders are learning about how historical events and figures have influenced modern communities. Finally, in science, they will be continuing their study of the solar system. With midyear benchmarks rapidly approaching, we will also be reviewing previously learned skills. We are excited to see how our students have grown in their learning so far this school year!

KINDERGARTEN NEWS
Kindergarten will be having "snow" much fun with winter topics. We will explore snow in many ways, even make our own. We will research arctic animals and animals in winter and use this research to learn how to write informational reports. Teachers will be formally assessing your kiddo's to discover their mid-year growth. The teacher sits with each child individually to assess reading and comprehension skills, first sound fluency skills, phoneme segmentation skills, non-sense word fluency skills, word recognition skills , letter naming fluency and math skills. This is time consuming but gives valuable information for us to grow our learners even more.
Reading Eggs is a great way to build literacy skills at home. So when your kiddo is trapped inside during the cold weather log on to Reading Eggs. It's fun and free!

Further, we are excited about the growth our students have made thus far as we conduct mid-year assessments in reading, writing, spelling and math. In music, our students are preparing for a Valentine’s Day musical performance on February the 15th which is our WAVE day. More information will be forthcoming about this event.
