#COLchat Description: Empowering Students to Share Their Story

Everyone has a story to tell. It is vital that we share the stories of the greatness that is happening in our schools and in our classrooms. During his talk Mr. Sharp will take you on a journey of a year in his classroom and how providing students with the opportunity to share their stories changed everything.

John Haydamacker

John M. Haydamacker has reengineered and revitalized the teaching and learning in his classroom! He has seventeen years of teaching experience from kindergarten to 8th Grade, with fourteen of those years teaching Middle School Science. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Middle School Science Education from Western Michigan University, with post-graduate teaching courses from Michigan Technical University.

John is currently employed by Grosse Ile Township Schools. John’s presentations include the Michigan Department of Education/Advanced Ed State School Improvement Conference, and the MAMSE Conference. Some of Mr. Haydamacker’s favorite topics are Standards-Based Grading, Summative & Formative Assessments, Professional Learning Communities, Effective Grading Practices, and interventions used to make sure the “Focus Is On Learning”. Being part of a team of teachers committed to improving their skills for the sake of student learning has dramatically changed his approach to teaching, assessing, and leading in his classroom. Let’s observe how overhauling an outdated grading practice has changed the culture of his classroom, have a few laughs, and think!

David Simancek

Dave Simancek is currently the principal of The Swartz Creek Academy, an alternative high school in Swartz Creek Michigan. Dave believes in building a culture of learning by empowering his students and staff to take ownership in their environment and to collaborate for a common purpose.

Dave created The Power of 100 which many high schools have adopted to battle bullying behavior.

The Power of 100 is organized around the idea there will always be 100 teens walking the halls and spread out on school grounds on the lookout for acts of bullying and there to support those who are on the receiving end of it.

Power of 100:

Dave is a true leader in building #COL's and moving away from Compliancy!
