CDS Middle School
Weekly Newsletter
October 26th, 2019
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
It was wonderful seeing so many of you at Parent Teacher Conferences last week. We were especially pleased to see so many dads present! Over 60% of our middle school families invested time to talk with teachers about their child's academic and social and emotional progress. We hope our decision to hold conferences in the evening made it possible for more of you to attend.
If there were any teachers who you wanted to meet with but didn't get the chance, please feel free to make an appointment with them for a later date. You can email them directly, or contact Ms. Lee in the MS Office and she will set the appointment.
I'd like to extend a special thank you to the high school students from the Interpreter Club for helping our parents and teachers understand one another! They did an excellent job!
Our student council members are busily preparing for the annual CDS Middle School Halloween Party. As you may know, this is one of the biggest student led events of the school year and we're all very excited. The party will begin at 4:00pm (directly after school) and will continue until 7:45pm.
Students are encouraged to wear costumes to school on Wednesday! However, please leave face masks and face makeup off until the party begins.
Have a great week!

Director of Middle School
How to Speak with Your Child about MAP Growth Test Results / 자녀와 MAP test 결과에 대해 이야기하는 법
Earlier this week we sent your children home with their MAP Family reports. I hope you've been able to take some time since then to speak with your child about their growth.
As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, conversation about grades and MAP scores will be most effective if the focus is centered on progress rather than achievement.
At CDS MS, we strive to create a culture where students value personal growth more than achieving the highest letter grade or RIT score. We know that for students to reach their potential, they need to have confidence and take risks with their learning.
If the focus on grades and achievement is too great, students are less likely to engage in challenging work because they're afraid they will fail. This applies to both high achieving and struggling learners.
It is my hope that we can work together as a school and parent community to share helpful messages with our students that encourage confidence and support growth.

Woven Emotions
For their final Term 1 project, students were able to apply their knowledge of the mandala to create a woven expression of their inner emotions and memories that bring them peace. Students continued their learning of how colors represent certain emotions and were able to generate their personal definition of colors to their feelings.
These Woven Emotions represent each students' definition of positive energy and how through art their energy can impact the surrounding audience.

Exploring Identity Through Portraiture
For Term 1, 8th graders tackled the concept of identity and how it forms and shapes the individual. Students started out by creating an identity map and explored ideas that linked to who they were. We continued their development for identity through class discussions and how perceptions can and cannot shape a person's identity.
These self portraits were created with the intention of expression how these students view themselves compared to how they are perceived from the outside world.
