Berkeley Township Elementary School
April 2019
April Showers....
As the weather continues to warm, know that the students will be going outside for recess as much as possible. They also have opportunities to view our school garden, work outside, and take some time to enjoy the fresh air while completing a science project. Please be mindful of the clothes the students are wearing to school and ensure it meets the district's dress code.
Thank you all so much for a wonderful year so far and we look forward to all that we have ahead in the coming months.

Let's talk ticks!
What to do if you find a tick on your child
1. Using fine-tipped tweezers, grab the tick close to the skin. Do not twist or jerk the tick, as this may cause the mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin.
2. With a steady motion, gently pull straight up until all parts of the tick are removed.
3. After removing the tick, clean your skin with soap and warm water.
4. Contact a healthcare provider if you develop symptoms of tick-borne disease.
Do not use petroleum jelly, hot matches, nail polish remover, or other products to remove a tick.
Rutgers Extension of Ocean County can identify the type of tick and the potential disease that tick may carry. Put the tick in a plastic bag or old medicine bottle with a piece of wet cloth or cotton ball and bring it to the facility. They will contact you the next day with the information. No appointment is necessary.

Reduce your chances of getting a tick-borne disease by checking your body for ticks after being outdoors. Be sure to check these parts of your body:
- Under the arms
- In/around the ears
- Inside belly button
- Back of the knees
- In/around the hair
- Between the legs
- Around the waist
- On the scalp
