Academic Updates

Language Arts:

Students will revise and edit their myths, revise and edit drafts to complete Portfolio 3, and begin a poetry unit.

Students will continue to work on dividing fractions and mixed numbers. Mr. Eleby will be "sprinkling in" some problems that will challenge students to use logical reasoning to deduce responses based on a limited amount of clues.

Social Studies:

Students have not had too many Social Studies classes since Spring Break (crazy schedules!) but they are starting to study the rise and fall of Chinese Dynasties, as well as study the major philosophies of Ancient China - Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism.

We are excited to move into the "engineering and design" quarter of our curriculum. Stay tuned!

Students are enjoying reading of Brandon Brown quiere un perro. They continue to have comprehension checks at the end of each chapter. Checks come in the form of a written assessment, skit, mad-libs paragraph, crossword puzzle, or quick write. Students are learning a new song as well. The classroom flags have changed to Argentina and Cuba and students will be learning about the culture and traditions of those two countries.

Please do not forget about the upcoming Spanish Open Houses during your child's regularly-scheduled Spanish class (Room 60 in the 6th Grade Wing):

Ballon: Wednesday, April 6 from 11:10 - 11:45am

Pound: Wednesday, April 6 from 1:40 - 2:25pm

Eleby: Thursday, April 7 from 12:50 - 1:25pm.

KIVA - Loans that change lives!

Kiva is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Using the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world.

Last Wednesday, students used class time to choose individuals or groups to receive $25 loans from the Class of 2023. After investigations, pitches, and voting, it was finally decided that the Smile Every Day Group from Vietnam would receive money to purchase materials to maintain their noodle restaurant. The Lungujja Model J. School in Uganda will receive money to purchase a water filtration system to provide clean drinking water for students, and Amina from Kenya will receive a loan to restock the shelves of her small store. We will keep you posted on our investments!
