Last year we shared that Blue Valley would have an inclement weather late start option for the 2019-20 school year. I’m excited to share that we now have that option in place. The two-hour delayed start will be used when temporary adverse weather conditions exist and will maximize instructional time with students rather than closing for the entire day. General information about two-hour delayed starts is available on the district website inclement weather web page.

Mark your calendar! Blue Valley Schools will hold a practice two-hour delayed start day on Thursday, Nov. 7. The purpose of a practice day is to allow families, staff and students to experience a delayed start in normal weather conditions and learn what can be improved upon.

On Nov. 7, all staff should report at their normal times; however, all school start times will be delayed by two hours. School will end at the regularly scheduled time. Your principal or supervisor will share details about the practice two-hour delayed start day and general expectations on delayed start days, so stay tuned for more information. Please note that staff will be notified of two-hour delayed start days in the same way you are notified of inclement weather days.

We look forward to practicing alongside you on Nov. 7!

Hours of School

  • All start times are delayed by two hours.

  • Elementary Schools will start at 10:35 a.m.

  • All high schools will start at 9:45, even on Thursdays.

  • All routes run 2 hours later.

  • All field trips and activity trips leaving before noon are cancelled.

  • Mid-day shuttles. Anything before noon is cancelled.

  • All students in out of district placements (Lake Mary, etc.) will go two hours later. Any half-day program is cancelled.

  • Internal transportation (ie geometry students) will go to their home school all day.

  • No am early childhood.

School Day -- Lunch

  • All food service and custodial employees are expected to report as close to normal time as possible.

  • Lunch to be served as close to the normal time as possible. No breakfast.

  • Bus Tracker: The Blue Valley Durham location will be utilizing a new transportation tool. It is in the form of a mobile app called Bus Tracker that is available for iOS and Android devices. To use the app, users will create an account when launching the app that is tied to an email address of the user’s choice. The tool is already active and will allow account users to follow the route of a specific bus. Durham is updating daily when a scheduled backup bus is being used for a planned maintenance activity. If a bus is replaced with a quick turnaround due to an unforeseen event, Durham dispatch will make the switch on Bus Tracker at their next opportunity to update the App.

  • TextCaster: Families are still encouraged to sign up for Durham TextCaster. The TextCaster system is designed to share the “why” as Bus Tracker is designed to tell the “where”. To sign up for Durham TextCaster visit

Big picture

This school year, we have access to some new tools to help us better communicate with you the learning taking place by your students. Canvas is our district’s Learning Management System that supports a more personalized, collaborative and engaging experience. Starting this quarter, all classroom teachers use Canvas as their standards-based grade book. Canvas will allow you to be observers of your student’s learning progress. In order to be able to do this, you will need a pairing code, which was sent home with your child on Thursday, September 26th. If you have not yet set up your account, please do so within 7 days! Your pairing code is set to expire on Thursday, October 3rd.

Setting up a new account: When setting up a new Canvas parent account (here) OR adding a new student to an already existing account, we recommend using the website, if available. The mobile app is a good option, but the usability is a little better on the website. After you have set it up via the website, you should be able to view your child(ren) on the Canvas Parent mobile app, if you so choose.

Courses now available: All classroom teacher Canvas courses are now published. This means that you should now be able to view your child on the mobile app and website.

Pairing Codes
: Each unique pairing code is meant to be used by only one unique observer, and each one expires within 7 days of creation or after it's used once by an observer. If for some reason your pairing code does not work, please reach out and we can generate another one for you.

Accessing the New Standards Based Grade Card

Sample blank report cards (K-5) are now available on the Parent SBG website. Click here to access that page of the website.

Click here to view the instructional video. It was made to help parents navigate Canvas so you can see grades for your children.
