Bristow Run ES Panther Press

September 2021

Dear Panther Families,

We wanted to thank the students, staff members, and families for such a wonderful start to the school year. We have loved meeting our new families and reconnecting with our returning families at Open House and throughout these first few weeks of school. Our mission at Bristow Run is to engage and empower every child and to have them feel a part of the Panther Family. Additionally, we strive to challenge each student to grow academically, behaviorally, and socially. We look forward to working hand in hand with all parents to ensure the very best for our students.

We encourage you to join us for our Back-to-School Nights scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 5 for grades K-2 and Thursday, Oct. 7 for grades 3-5. Both nights we will start promptly at 6:00 and end at 7:00. Teachers will have a virtual option for parents who prefer not to attend in= person. Back to School Nights are informational sessions for parents and students should not attend as the teacher will be presenting information for parents.

Throughout the school year, please check our school website for important updates. The calendar is always updated, and the Encore schedule is posted weekly. Our monthly newsletters will be posted as they’re available. We also encourage you to check out our school’s Facebook page by liking the Bristow Run Elementary School page and our Twitter page by following us @BristowRunES. Here you will find the most up-to-date information and announcements.

Once again, we are honored to serve our Bristow Run families. It is truly a privilege to be a part of a community where parents, teachers, and students care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support academic and social growth. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Please read our September newsletter for important information and a few pictures from our first few weeks at school.

Warm Regards,

Mrs. Jeck and Ms. Gamble

Information from School Nurse: Mrs. Antonucci

Just as a reminder:

If your child becomes sick at school with any Covid-19 and/or influenza-like symptoms that cannot be attributed to another known diagnosis, you will be called and asked to take your child home. Your child will need to be evaluated by a physician and cleared for return to school. Based on your child’s symptoms, if the physician feels a Covid test is warranted, I will need a copy of the test results for your child’s attendance record.

Parents are asked to evaluate their students for symptoms of illness each day before sending them to school. If your child has any of the following symptoms, please do not send them to school: fever greater than or equal to 100.4, cough, difficulty breathing, loss of sense of taste or smell, sore throat, nasal congestion/nasal discharge, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, fatigue, chills, or headache.

If your child has been exposed to someone who has tested positive and it's been determined that he/she is a close contact, your child will need to quarantine at home. The guidelines we follow for quarantining have been established by Prince William Health District. If your child is a close contact, please call me so I can review these options with you.

Please call or email me with questions or to provide medical updates regarding your child.

Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA)

  • Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) is a beginning-of-the-year assessment for students in grades 3-5.
  • The assessment will be given to students in grades 3-5 during the months of September and October.

Canvas and Lexia

Teachers are in the process of getting their Canvas pages updated with current information. Students are learning how to access Canvas and how to complete work asynchronously. During Back-to-School Nights parents will learn more about Canvas. For parents who would like additional support, Mr. Painter will be offering a Canvas Training Zoom session on Tuesday, Oct. 12th at 6:30.

Also, your child will be utilizing Lexia this year. Lexia is a PWCS purchased resource that proved useful to our students that participated last year. You will get more information from your child's teacher during Back-to-School Night but know that it is important they meet their usage goals each week to ensure continued success. If you used Lexia last year, then go ahead and start using it now at home! You can access Lexia through Clever. PLEASE have your child work on this INDEPENDENTLY as it gives us data to guide our instructional practices.

BRES School Counseling Department

Our school counseling department is an award-winning program that delivers a comprehensive, developmental program that is aligned with the American School Counseling Association National Model ® and is organized to ensure accountability. Our counselors are educators who are specially trained in childhood development and collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and support staff to help ensure success for every student. Programs are analyzed for effectiveness and decisions are made on how best to provide students with knowledge and skills in the areas of academic, career and social/emotional development. We teach lessons, offer small groups, and provide individual counseling. Our school counseling website can be found by going to the Bristow Run homepage and clicking on departments.

We are currently teaching grades 3,4,5 during encore time. We rotate about every four weeks with our Librarian, Mrs. Tucker, and classes take place in the library. Students can check out books at the end of our classes.

We look forward to working with your child this year!
