Fall is in the air
Apples, pumpkins, and math
Morning math
Just to give you a glimpse into the beginning of our day... On Mondays, we practice collecting data. Last week, we polled a Community class to see which book character they liked better. This week, we polled Community 3 to see if they like chapter books or picture books better. On Tuesday, students tally the data. On Wednesday, they practice writing in sentence form. On Thursday, students write equations to match their data. On Friday, they graph the data. This past week, we went back to Community 3 to share our findings.
We have a helper each day that identifies the day and counting how many days we have been in school. We count in different ways; ones, fives, tens, twos, odds and evens. We do this is different ways; tens frames, straw chart, number line, and 120s chart. We practice ten more, ten less, one more, and one less. We practice making equations and solving.
Dreamfield Farms field trip
At the pumpkin patch, there were jumpies, a petting area, learning how to milk a cow and make butter.
And hamster ball.. Along with corn bins, duck races, tractor races, swings.
And that's not all...hayride, picking a pumpkin and hay mountain.
Here is a link to more pictures from the pumpkin patch...
Glyphs
Ask your child what a glyph is...A glyph is a mathematical representation. They create a picture by answering questions. We have completed an apple glyph and a pumpkin glyph. These are awesome because, we can compile the data by looking at the pictures to practice using bigger numbers and making equations. These are included in your child's math journal.
Counting jar
Each day, your child has a "job." They have to go to the "counting jar." Inside the jar, they will find a given number of an item. They need to count and write the numeral in their math journal. This week, we have practiced counting 10s and 1s.
Daily News
Each day, we also complete "Daily News." This is a short period of time that we look at sentence structure. You may have seen one of these come home. I model the correct way to write a sentence. Students take turns identifying parts of sentences (i.e. subject, predicate, capital letters, punctuation, blends, diagraphs, etc.). We use symbols to stand for things to help us remember (i.e. we put an eyeball over sight words because when we see them, we read them).
