Student Attendance is Important!
Thank you parents and families for your commitment to ensure your students come to school on time every day. Reminder that more than 2 days absent (unexcused) per month is considered chronic absenteeism. Student attendance is absolutely critical if we are going to have each and every child reach their full potential at Chinook.
Our district has implemented changes in an effort to eliminate "unexcused" absences. All absences must be accounted for every day. If you know that your child will be absent please send a note, or email Chinook.Attendance@vansd.org, or call the absence line (313-1402) to report it. The following are the specific attendance procedures implemented by VPS:
- If your student is absent, a parent/guardian must contact the school by phone, email or note to excuse the absence within 3 school days after returning to school.
- Students with unexcused absences are considered truant.
- If your student is ill for 5 consecutive days, a note from a doctor is required to excuse the absence.
Tardy Goal - 15 or Fewer!
We have started the Chinook Tardy Goal Board! Our Goal is 15 Tardies or less per day.
- Students who arrive to school after 8:30 am are tardy.
- Students who leave cafeteria late and arrive after 8:30 am are tardy.
Some days we have recorded 30-50 students who are tardy ~ which equals the number of times classrooms are interrupted for students arriving late.
Changes to Student Go Home Plans Must be in Writing
ALL GO HOME CHANGES MUST GO THROUGH THE FRONT OFFICE BY 2 PM.
The front office will communicate go home plans with teachers each day.
We are unable to take changes over the phone. Please send a note with your student(s) with the following information:
*Date
*Students first and last name
*Teachers name
*How your student will go home (if bus please include bus color)
*Parent signature
If you are unable to send a note, email the office by 2pm: chinook.attendance@vansd.org
We appreciate your help in making the end of the school day run as smoothly as possible!
Reminder: During the school day we cannot put calls through to teachers or students. Students who bring cell phones to school are to keep them turned off and in their backpacks. They are not to be used during the school day.
Student Safety Is Important!
Students are allowed at school at 8am to either the Playground or Cafeteria. Please do not drop off students early as we do not have supervision.
Nurse Notes:
Parents please talk to your children about good and frequent hand washing with warm, soapy water, and to avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth.
The best way to decrease the spread of any respiratory illnesses are:
* Staying home when you are sick.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth.
* Frequent hand washing, with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
* Cover cough/sneeze
Children should be kept at home if any of the following conditions are present (keep in mind the absence of fever does not always indicate the child is well enough to attend school):
• Fever over 100 degrees – Must be fever free for 24 hours (without temperature lowering medication) before returning to school.
• Vomiting and/or Diarrhea - within the past 24 hours
Important Immunization Changes
Immunization Changes for 2020-2021 School Year
We want your child to start school on the first day of school. Please make sure your child’s immunizations are up to date before you register your child for the 2020-2021 school year. You can avoid the back-to-school rush in August by contacting your child’s doctor now to get the required vaccinations.
Beginning August 2020:
1. Children will not be able to start school unless they are in compliance with Washington state immunization requirements. https://www.doh.wa.gov/CommunityandEnvironment/Schools/Immunization
2. Medically verified immunization records will be required to complete the certificate of immunization status card for any newly enrolled student. https://www.doh.wa.gov/YouandYourFamily/Immunization/SchoolandChildCare/RuleChanges

Kindergarten Jump Start
Monday through Friday, August 17th - 21st from 9 am-11:30 am
Register to attend Kindergarten Jump Start! All incoming kindergarten students are invited to attend Kindergarten Jump Start at Chinook. This free program offers new students an opportunity to participate in a variety of math, literacy and hands-on activities; learn school routines; and become familiar with their new surroundings.
Data shows that students who attend Jump Start are better prepared for kindergarten than children who do not participate. They also gain confidence, leadership skills and enthusiasm for school. Don’t miss this opportunity to give your child a successful transition to kindergarten!
Transportation is not available.
Clothes:
Change of clothes - We ask that all parents pack a light change of clothes in your child's backpack so students are prepared for any type of accident.
Dress for the Weather - The weather can be unpredictable, please make sure students are dressed for the weather and to keep warm. We do play outside for recess!
Health Room Clothes - We do have some clothing available for accidents. If your student has borrowed clothing, please wash and return to school. Thank you to the families for health room donations.

Thank you, voters!
A three-year supplemental levy that will maintain current levels of programs and services in Vancouver Public Schools was recently approved by Vancouver voters with 60.51% yes votes. The levy will make up a multi-million budget shortage due to changes in state funding for education.
“I am extremely grateful to this community for providing more than 55 years of continuous financial support for our students and schools,” said Superintendent Steve Webb. “This election shows the value our voters hold for the education of our children and youth.”
For information about the levy, please visit vansd.org/levy.

¡Gracias, votantes!
