Welcome Back! New Year, New Schedule
It has been wonderful to see students again at school following winter break. We hope everyone had a fun and relaxing break and are excited for some new changes taking place at JDAL! Our staff members have been working with members of the Student Council to listen to concerns and problem solve solutions. Some of these have included small changes, such as creating a Quiet Work Zone, adding a movement room and calming space, and setting up a student print station.
One change is quite large and is something staff and Student Council have been working on for several weeks. Many of JDAL's newest and youngest students have expressed concern with learning how to complete project-work. Although we implemented PBL101 and PBL201 last year, we recognized that students needed even more guidance in their project work. JDAL staff and Student Council have created a new student schedule that allows for more guided instruction in the four core areas (math, science, social studies, and English) for our PBL101 and PBL 201 students. This schedule will take place every Monday and Wednesday, which still allows students to have the independence and freedom they enjoy the other days of the week.
We will also be starting our new PBL 301 and 401 seminars on Tuesdays and Thursdays for students who have developed a strong command of project-based learning. This includes World War II with Ms. Melissa; The Hero's Journey with Ms. Jenna; Film Analysis with Ms.Tricia; Novel Writing with Ms. Josie; Car Care with Mr. Matthew; and Artifact Adventure with Mr. Sage.
We are still finalizing the details of the schedule, so please stay tuned for more details.

Beautiful Minds "Dyslexia and the Creative Advantage"
Beautiful Minds "Dyslexia and the Creative Advantage" an Art exhibit that celebrates the creative gifts and talents of children and adults with dyslexia! “Many people have the wrong idea about what dyslexia actually is — in ‘Beautiful Minds’ we are using art, among other things, to show that one of the strengths people with dyslexia have is their creative artistic talents. “The exhibit will illuminate many of the misconceptions of dyslexia, educate those who aren’t familiar with it and empower those who have this most common learning disability. It also shines a light on the heightened creative skills that are so commonly found in people who have dyslexia,” The exhibition also features artwork from students and adults with dyslexia along with family members and friends who will create works of art as an expression of love for them. “In school we gauge intelligence by one’s ability to read. Children who struggle to learn to read feel alone as they struggle to master what comes easily for so many. ‘Beautiful Minds’ is a place of acceptance while opening the minds of parents, educators, family and friends to the hidden potential that goes unrecognized in the 10 to 20 percent who struggle with dyslexia. Jayne Black, Mrs. US continental is spending her year promoting her platform Beautiful Minds "Dyslexia in the Creative Advantage". Jayne was diagnosed as an adult with dyslexia and also has a son with dyslexia. Let's create a world where children with dyslexia can stand proud and shine bright!
