The Sing-a-Long was absolutely fabulous! Our students are so talented! Thank you for supporting them in the pursuit of growing musically!! Thank you to our wonderful music teachers, Lee Anne Rogers and Kristen Rhyner, for helping to grow our children!! We also thank Betty Miller for teaching guitar to those interested in this afternoon instruction. It takes everyone--students, parents, and teachers--to make this possible! Now I am in the spirit of the season due to their joyful music!!
Many thanks to the wonderful donations to our Community Service Drive! I know our School District Social Workers are going to beam with pride as we reach out to our local community members who are in need. Thank YOU!!!
Principal for the Day was a load of fun with our four students. You will enjoy their own newsletters about their day as well as photos at their individual links that we will share with you next week. Truly a great day with our students!
To each of you I wish you a very safe and happy holiday! Stay warm, enjoy friends and family as well as great food, and...read, read, read with our children! I do thank you for sharing your children and support with us at Midway! May the new year bring much happiness to all!
Yours truly,
Jan Fickling, Principal of Midway Elementary

What a Neat Way to Start The Day!
The Barnette family purchased a ride in a police car at our recent Silent Auction. Last week a Lexington Police Officer picked up Nathan Barnette and his brother Luke from their home, took them to Krispy Kreme and then arrived at school in style, blue lights and all! The officer was so kind and came into the school and spoke with both of our classes. We ended our visit with some donuts they shared with the classes. Thank you so much for this neat experience!
Midway's Winter Holiday Sing-Along
Thank You to the After-School Guitar Classes, Fourth Grade Fall Chorus, Fifth Grade Band Class and our District and State Honor Choir representatives lead our annual Winter Holiday Sing-Along. Also a big Thank You to Music Teachers, Mrs. Lee Anne Rogers, Ms. Rhyner, and after school guitar teacher, Ms. Betty Miller!
1st grade students have Grinch Day and donate to Toys for Tots!

TypingQuest for grades 3-5
Why teach keyboarding in elementary school? As the Education Infographics website explains, testing is increasingly becoming computer based including spring standardized testing and instructional time often involves the use of technology. Explicit keyboarding instruction instills more confidence and less frustration when using technology, It fosters digital literacy and accelerates performance on standardized testing, boosts creative thought, and advances language skills.
Students who have been instructed on the use of TypingQuest at MES can access the program at home at this webaddress: https://online3.typingmaster.com/login?id=ra368vmgd Students use their district (Google) login for TypingQuest. Parents should supervise children using TypingQuest at home to make sure fingers are on homerow keys and they do not revert back to "hunting and pecking."

MES Students Participate in Hour of Code
Hour of Code is a global movement by Computer Science Education Week (December 4th-11th) and Code.org/learn that reaches tens of millions of students in 180+ countries through a one-hour introduction to computer science and computer programming. In grades K-2, students learned how to program using the app Code-a-pillar or BeeBot.
In grades 3-5 students all began with Disney’s Moana: Wayfinding with Code.
Students watched a short video by coders and then began moving Moana using code through a series of challenges. In time students were able to select other coding activities such as Minecraft and Starwars. Some students have gone home since this introduction and earned a certificate from Code.org by completing an entire activity.
We learned during career week that we have students already interested in coding. We hope our students who are interested in this topic will continue to explore it.
