Class of 2022 Weekly Review
Week of November 2, 2020
A Note from Mrs. Opdyke
As we approach this week, I want you to keep in mind the acronym that Mr. Bucher has shared often in his messages to the school. "You are TITANS - You are: Timeless, Inclusive, Talented, Ambitious, Notable, and Strong." I want you to remember these words as you wrap up the last week of Marking Period 1, as we learn the results of Election Day 2020, as we continue to navigate life under COVID-19. You embody these characteristics. You make me proud to say that I'm your House Principal. Finish this marking period strong. Begin the new one with excitement and grit. You are TITANS!
Mr. Monk, Mrs. Davis, Mr. Bui, and I will continue to be here to help in any way that we can. Please reach out if you need anything! However you are joining us for your classes, I wish you a successful week 9 of the school year.
Please stay healthy and well!
Mrs. Opdyke

GEARS DAY with UPenn
The University of Pennsylvania’s Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a national non-profit organization that aims to advocate and increase opportunities for women in engineering and technology fields. Our chapter does this by inviting high school-aged women to our annual Girls in Engineering and Related Sciences (GEARS) Day.
GEARS Day is an annual event that allows participants to explore engineering majors and careers alongside Penn engineering students. This year, GEARS Day will take place virtually on January 17 - 18, 2021. Participants will be placed into groups consisting of 10-12 students and 2 Penn student leaders. Each group will work together to brainstorm, research, and design creative solutions to an engineering-related case/problem. The groups will have an initial meeting on January 9th or 10th to brainstorm and research solutions, as well as an additional brainstorming session on January 17th to continue the research process. The groups will present their solutions to all GEARS Day participants and volunteers on January 18th. Additionally, there will be a student panel during which participants can hear from female Penn engineering students and a guest speaker from the Philadelphia Society of Women Engineers. The schedule for the event is below:
Saturday-Sunday, January 9th-10th, 2021
1 hour meeting with groups (students will be assigned one day)
Sunday, January 17, 2021
3:00 p.m. - Introduction & Student Panel
3:30 p.m. - Brainstorming & Research with Groups
Monday, January 18, 2021
10:00 a.m. - Presentations
11:00 a.m - Break
11:15 a.m. - Closing Speaker + Wrap-Up
The GEARS Day application link is here: https://forms.gle/q63MmsC8hSxYcyrQ9
Applications close on December 1st at 11:59 p.m. Final decisions will be sent out in mid-December. Any female high school student who might be interested is asked to apply to attend GEARS Day this winter and learn what studying and practicing engineering is like!
Feel free to contact pennswe.gears@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns regarding the event.
Standardized Testing Timeline
December through June – Students should take the SAT and or the ACT at least one time along with SAT Subject tests if necessary. SAT and ACT are not required by all colleges and universities; however, it may be wise to take one or both at least once in the event your son or daughter decides to apply to a school that does require scores. SAT Subject tests are often required by more selective colleges and universities.
Register at:
SAT - collegegboard.org
ACT - act.org
AP course exams: The exams take place during the first two weeks of May. Students work with their current AP teacher in joining the AP class through their Collegeboard account. Payment for the exams will begin at some point in January.
Keystone Virtual College Exploration
The Keystone Virtual College Exploration holds numerous panel presentations and individual information sessions beginning daily at 2:00pm (ET). Recordings are available for all students to view at www.pacac.org/virtual. Session recordings will be added within one week of the scheduled presentation.
Visit www.pacac.org/virtual to view the full schedule of panel sessions and individual information sessions through November 6. The virtual program is FREE for all students, parents, and counselors throughout Pennsylvania.

Safe2Say
Safe2Say is a valuable resource that has been set up by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to provide a method for anyone to report a concern about a student or group of students 24/7. Please note some important reminders about the use of Safe2Say:
- If you put in a tip, please check back often for communications. The tip line is monitored 24/7 at the state level. The tip is sent to the school and/or police if it is deemed "Life Safety" immediately. It is sent in the morning if it is determined to be "Non-Life Safety." I will respond as soon as I am able to do so - this will always depend on the timing and nature of the tip.
- It is important to include as much information as possible. If you have evidence of your concerns, please share that evidence via the tip or with us. You can attach pictures and videos in the Safe2Say system.
- It is always best to try and contact Mrs. Davis, Mr. Monk, or myself directly if it is not a matter of life safety. We will likely be the ones to work through the concern and it is helpful to be able to speak directly with you.
Please remember that Safe2Say is statewide system that is used in collaboration with the State Attorney's Office, emergency responders, and school officials. It is important to know that tips are reviewed on the state level before being passed to the local police and/or school authorities. Please consider the purpose of your tip - Is it to provide another person with a way to receive help? Is it preventing an act of violence? Is it something that needs to involve local and state authorities? While the system is anonymous, abuse of the system will not be tolerated and actions will be taken if it is determined that the system is being used inappropriately.
Please see images below for some resources and current programs being offered by Safe2Say.

Hybrid Learning Schedule
Attendance Procedures
Hybrid Students - In Person Days
If a student should be physically present in the building and staying home, we do need this communication to come from the parents/guardians. Please call the CB South 24 hour Attendance Hotline (267)893-3200 or send an e-mail to the CB South Attendance Office at southattendance@cbsd.org. This is the equivalent of a student being absent from school during a traditional schedule and the PA School Attendance Code requires a parent/guardian to submit an excuse note when their child is not physically present in the building.
If a student is not in physically in school, but attending their classes virtually, the student will be marked absent until we have communication from a parent/guardian. The attendance code will be changed to “VP = Virtual Present” once we have the communication from the parent/guardian.
Online Students - Students all Virtual or Hybrid Students on Virtual Days
If a student does not attend class virtually, the student will be marked absent until we receive the communication from a parent/guardian. Please call the CB South 24 hour Attendance Hotline (267)893-3200 or send an e-mail to the CB South Attendance Office at southattendance@cbsd.org.
If a student does not engage during the instructional block, the student will be marked absent. This will be coded as “VC = Virtual Cut” indicating that the student did not participate in the class. This code will count as an unexcused absence on the student’s attendance record.

Boomerang Awards
The CB Cares Boomerang Youth Recognition Award is a district-wide monthly program which recognizes and honors youth in our community for exemplifying and living by one of the chosen Developmental Assets for the school year. Please see the information below for the nomination form and 20-21asset poster.
Don't forget - Students can nominate themselves or their friends too.
The Healthier Community Team made a suggestion that all nominations going forward should have an example of the asset in action in regard to the student, rather than just a description of the student that "he/she shows integrity all of the time". It is really helpful in terms of differentiating the nominees since they all are great kids - examples help make the choice easier.
