Celebration of Learning!

Come and join us this Wednesday, December 5th, as we celebrate what your child has learned in our classes.

All parents are welcome to attend with their students on a "come and go" basis from 4:30-7:30 p.m. (no appointments needed). The student will show you what they have been doing in class, and you will also have an opportunity to speak to the teacher.

Out of respect to all the parents and students in the room, please keep your conversation brief and positive. If you feel you need a more in-depth conversation, please let the teacher know and a time can be arranged to meet.

Dress Up!

Please make sure that your child is dressing for the weather. Toques, mittens, scarves, boots and ski pants are all important for kids to stay dry and warm! SMS Staff encourage students to dress appropriately when they are heading outdoors. We will keep students inside when the temperature drops below -28 (windchill). So far we have had beautiful winter weather so we've had lots of time to enjoy the outside!

Bus Delays and Storm Days

The HSD website contains information regarding bus delays. All school buses that are late for whatever reason will be posted on this site. The Bus Transportation Department does not call individual homes when buses are cancelled or running late. This information can be found under Services - Transportation Services - Bus Delay Bulletins.

HSD School Closure Policy

The Hanover School Division Board of Trustees is committed to providing all students and staff with a safe and healthy work/learning environment.

Extreme Hazardous Weather

Schools will close when weather and road conditions in Hanover School Division are such that it is not advisable to transport students via school buses. If weather worsens after the school day has started (creating unsafe driving conditions that necessitate cancelling bus service for the return trip home), students will remain in school until other arrangements can be made. Buses will not be sent out early.

Extreme Cold Weather

Schools will be closed for cold weather reasons when it’s too cold for students to be exposed to the elements for even a short period of time.

Schools will close for cold weather reasons when the temperatures are:
-35 degrees Celsius or colder, WITH a windchill of -45 degrees Celsius or colder.

Consideration to close schools may also be given if either the temperature or the wind chill significantly surpasses these levels, or there are other extenuating circumstances as determined by the Superintendent and Director of Transportation.

Parent Choice
During extreme weather (when schools are required to be kept open according to policy), parents may use their discretion to keep children at home if they feel their children’s safety may be compromised in any way. Parents choosing to keep children at home due to weather safety concerns, should inform the school as per regular absence procedures.

Parent Notification
In the case of school closures or the cancellation of bus service, parents will receive a phone message from the division’s information call system. Notice will also be made between the hours of 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. on a variety of local and provincial media outlets (AM 1250, Mix 96.7, CJOB, SteinbachOnline.com, and TheCarillon.com), including the HSD Twitter account at @HanoverSD. Information on school closures, or bus delays/cancellations will also be posted at HSD.ca.

Facility Rentals
When all schools in the division are closed due to extreme weather, evening rentals of our school facilities will also be cancelled. The only exception to this will be for a major event, which has been planned and advertised extensively for a long period of time prior to event date, and which cannot reasonably be cancelled on short notice, or rescheduled without major inconvenience/cost.

Message from the Transportation Department

We are actively looking for new Spare Bus Drivers in our School Division. This is a great casual part-time job where you control the amount you want to work. Hanover School Division Transportation Department provides all of the training you need to be a successful bus driver. If you are interested, please email rwarkentin@hsd.ca for more information.

SMS Grade 5/6 Ball Hockey

On Saturday, November 17th, SMS hosted an HSD Ball Hockey Tournament for 8 teams. Our SMS Jets finished in 2nd place. The SMS Jets lost in the championship game to Blumenort School 2-1. The Jets' only goal of that game was scored by Erik N. The Jets had a record of 4 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie - great finish!

Jackson P (SMS Penguins) and Erik N (Jets) were the two SMS students chosen as All-Stars. Both boys finished the tournament with nine goals and one assist to lead their teams.

Cameron N of the SMS Penguins was selected for the Sportsmanship Award for SMS. Each school selected one of their students who demonstrated a positive attitude and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

Overall it was a fun and active day!

Thank you Mr. Don Dewey for organizing these tournaments.

Microwaves

Please try to send a lunch to school with your child that does not need to be microwaved. We have a limited number of microwaves available for use and the line ups for those microwaves can be very long.

Also, if your child brings something in the lunch that requires a fork or spoon, please pack the utensil with the lunch. The school does not have extra spoons or forks to provide to students.

Lunch Hour Policy

Going to Tim Horton's (or Coop) at noon is not permitted for our students unless they bring a note from home or a parent phones to give them permission. Students need to stay on campus unless they live close enough to the school that they go home for lunch. Crossing Highway 12 (Brandt Street) is dangerous and there is no crossing guard available during the busy lunch hour.

Use of Crosswalks

Students should be encouraged to use the crosswalks available rather than jay-walking across streets. Before and after school adult crossing guards are positioned at the intersections of McKenzie and Brandt, Reimer and Brandt, and Fourth Street and Barkman Avenue. Please encourage your child to make good use of these safe routes while walking to school.

Sports News

The Volleyball Season is over for another year. Congratulations to all of our players and coaches for a fantastic volleyball season. Thank you to those who take the time to coach our students as well, we could not do this without your help!

Basketball season is right around the corner, with our first basketball practices starting this week. Good luck to all those who will be playing on our teams!

Makerspace

Thanks to all parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends who have been donating items to our Makerspace program! At the moment we have enough to keep us busy for a while, so you can recycle or reuse as you see fit, and we are good until the next call for help!

Merry Christmas!

From the Students and Staff

at Stonybrook Middle School.

We hope you enjoy

a wonderful holiday

with family and friends.
