It is that time of year when we prepare for the end of the school year, graduation, and summer school - Summer Flight 2023.

This summer, we are offering courses for students who want to get ahead and accelerate their learning, classes for students who have fallen behind and need to make up credits to be on track for graduation, and enrichment opportunities that can be taken to improve learning and add recreational fun throughout the summer months. Whatever the case, we are here to support our families and scholars.

Summer Flight 2023 registration will run from May 1 through June 20.

The dates for Summer Flight 2023 are below.

On Friday, April 14, the Lady Pirates Track & Field team competed in the Barrington Invitational.

Top performers of the meet included sophomore Tori Robinson-Thomas who won the 300-meter hurdles in 48.24 seconds. She also won and anchored the 4x100m relay along with teammates freshman Zoey Gay and sophomores Ava Kimble and Jessica Flowers. Junior Nyah Akbar placed 4th in the 800m run with a season-best time of 2:30.61.

The meet hosted a total of 14 teams. The Lady Pirates will be competing in the Sue Pariseau Invitational at Glenbard West High School on Saturday, April 22. This meet is an 18-team invitational featuring some of the state's best teams.

On April 17, the Educational Services team spent periods 1 through 8 at Proviso East High School talking with students about the benefits of Paper 24/7 online tutoring and helping them sign in via Clever.

Students can now access a tutor to help with their homework assignments, review papers, and practice for an upcoming test.

Thank you to the administration and the physical education teachers for their assistance. Great job, Proviso East!

Students in the advanced manufacturing class at Proviso West recently learned about the components of the manual lathe with their instructor, Ms. April Senase. A manual lathe is a type of machine tool which rotates the workpiece about an axis against the edge of a cutting tool.

The students have been working on making their own "top" for their first project. They learned how to use the automatic feed settings for both the X and Z axis of the machine so that they could turn down the diameter of their handle. This project required the student to learn the parts and safety procedures for multiple devices in the shop such as the horizontal bandsaw, the belt sander, and the lathe.

They have also had to use their measurement skills with the tape measure and dial caliper.

With all the bad press about the teaching profession these days, it did not stop Proviso West High School education scholars from enjoying a discovery experience on April 14, 2023, at Triton College for an Education Symposium.

Students, with the goals of being teachers someday, learned from top educators in both the keynote and smaller breakout sessions including Ms. Angela Staunton, Chairperson, Department of Education; Dr. Jolynn McCray, Triton College Faculty; Dr. Rebecca Pruitt from Lewis University and Dr. Melissa Smith of Concordia University.

Seniors began the day by enrolling for the fall semester, and all scholars finished the symposium with lunch and a campus tour. Congratulations to senior Ketzia Gonzalez, who won a game during the opening session. Triton College gifts were given to everyone for attending.

The Freshmen/Sophomore group for the Culinary Club met on April 10 to make pizza from scratch.

While they faced some challenges with some groups needing more flour, the students showed creativity for this obstacle. One group ended up making mini pizzas using cupcake liners.

The pizzas were made with fresh vegetables, and the students realized how making your own pizza can cost less than $4.

Their hard work, creativity, perseverance, and enthusiasm paid off!

On April 14, students from Multicultural Club and Raza Unidos were able to attend the Illinois LAtino Council on Higher Education (ILACHE) conference held at Malcolm X College.

The conference, titled "La Riqueza de la Raza: Using Collective Wisdom to Dismantle Colonial Practices," provided students the opportunity to attend presentations and discuss research projects with current college undergraduates, including PMSA alum Felix Giron.

The students were also able to network with Latino university and college professionals.

On March 29, the team from Maywood's Firehouse Dream partnered with PMSA to provide students with Wellness Guidance. The purpose of this meeting was for students to discuss and understand what they are going through due to recent events within the schools. They shared what they are experiencing as a school and how the staff is handling these situations.

On April 18, members of the National Honor Society (NHS) Recycling Club discussed with Mr. Leon House, maintenance lead of PMSA, and Mr. Davis of EGSL about recycling initiatives to raise personal and public awareness of environmental issues, including the benefit of reducing, reusing, and recycling materials (plastic, paper, and aluminum) that would otherwise be sent to landfill sites.

Este verano, estamos ofreciendo cursos para estudiantes que quieren avanzar y agilizar su aprendizaje, clases para estudiantes que se han quedado atrás y necesitan recuperar créditos para estar en camino para la graduación, y oportunidades de enriquecimiento que se pueden tomar para mejorar el aprendizaje y sumar diversión recreativa a lo largo de los meses de verano. El 17 de abril, el equipo de Servicios Educativos pasaron los períodos 1 a 8 con los estudiantes de Proviso East High School trabajando sobre los beneficios de la tutoría de Paper Online 24/7 y ayudándoles a inscribirse a través de Clever.

Los estudiantes de la clase de fabricación avanzada en Proviso West aprendieron recientemente acerca de los componentes del torno manual con su instructora, la Sra. April Senase. Un torno manual es una máquina herramienta que hace girar la pieza de trabajo alrededor de un eje contra el filo de la herramienta de corte.

Los alumnos han estado trabajando en la fabricación de su "tapa" para su primer proyecto. Aprendieron a utilizar los ajustes de avance automático para los ejes X y Z de la máquina para poder reducir el diámetro de su mango. Este proyecto requirió que el estudiante aprendiera las piezas y los procedimientos de seguridad de múltiples dispositivos del taller, como la sierra de cinta horizontal, la lijadora de banda y el torno.

También han tenido que utilizar sus habilidades de medición con la cinta métrica y el calibre de cuadrante.

Con toda la mala prensa sobre la profesión docente en estos días, no impidió que los estudiantes de educación de Proviso West High School disfrutaran de una experiencia de descubrimiento el 14 de abril de 2023, en Triton College para un Simposio de Educación.

Los estudiantes con el objetivo de ser maestros algún día aprendieron de los mejores educadores en el discurso de apertura y sesiones más pequeñas, incluyendo a la Sra. Angela Staunton, Presidenta del Departamento de Educación; la Dra. Jolynn McCray, Facultad de Triton College; la Dra. Rebecca Pruitt de la Universidad de Lewis y la Dra. Melissa Smith de la Universidad de Concordia.

Los seniors comenzaron el día inscribiendose para el semestre de otoño, y todos los estudiantes terminaron el simposio con un almuerzo y una visita al campus. Enhorabuena a la estudiante de último curso Ketzia González, que ganó un juego durante la sesión inaugural. Se entregaron regalos de Triton College a todos los asistentes.

El grupo de Freshmen/Sophomore del Club Culinario se reunió el 10 de abril para hacer pizza desde cero.

Aunque enfrentaron a algunos retos, con algunos grupos necesitando más harina, los estudiantes mostraron creatividad en este obstáculo. Un grupo terminó haciendo mini pizzas usando moldes para cupcakes.

Las pizzas se prepararon con verduras frescas, y los estudiantes se dieron cuenta de cómo el hacer tu propia pizza puede costar menos de $4.

Su esfuerzo, creatividad, perseverancia y entusiasmo dieron sus frutos.

El 14 de abril, los estudiantes del Club Multicultural y Raza Unidos pudieron asistir a la conferencia del Illinois LAtino Council on Higher Education (ILACHE) celebrada en Malcolm X College.

La conferencia, titulada "La Riqueza de la Raza: Usando la Sabiduría Colectiva para Desmantelar las Prácticas Coloniales", proporcionó a los estudiantes la oportunidad de asistir a presentaciones, y discutir proyectos de investigación con estudiantes universitarios actuales, incluyendo al ex-alumno de PMSA Félix Girón).

Los participantes pudieron relacionarse con profesionales latinos de universidades y colegios.

El 29 de marzo, el equipo del Firehouse Dream de Maywood se asoció con PMSA para proveer a los estudiantes con Orientación de Bienestar. El propósito de esta reunión fue para que los estudiantes discutieran y entiendan lo que están pasando debido a los recientes acontecimientos dentro de las escuelas. Ellos compartieron acerca de lo que están viviendo como una escuela y cómo el personal está manejando estas situaciones.

El 18 de abril, miembros del Club de Reciclaje de la Sociedad Nacional de Honor (NHS) discutieron con el Sr. Leon House, líder de mantenimiento de PMSA, y el Sr. Davis de EGSL sobre las iniciativas de reciclaje para aumentar la conciencia personal y pública sobre los problemas ambientales, incluyendo el beneficio de reducir, reutilizar y reciclar materiales (plástico, papel y aluminio) que de otro modo serían enviados a los vertederos.
