November 12, 2018

Dear Village Oaks Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! As a staff we are very excited to see you at our upcoming conferences which occur this Tuesday, November 13 from 1pm-4pm and 5pm-8pm. We will have a half day of school on Tuesday and students will be dismissed at 12:30pm. Conferences are the perfect opportunity to hear from your child’s teacher about ways to reinforce the learning that is occurring at VO. We look forward to sharing all of the progress that your child has made so far this school year!

Last week Mrs. Smith, Dr. Ellis, and I attended the National Blue Ribbon Award Ceremony in Washington D.C. to accept our award on behalf of Village Oaks and our school district. Please enjoy the pictures below from the ceremony!

Sincerely,

Alex

Pictures were sent home in October. Please remember, if you would like a retake, keep your picture package intact. Do not cut, open or use in any way. The package is your "ticket" for a retake. If you cut the picture, use the mug or manipulate the pictures in any way, you can still get a retake, but you will have to purchase a new package. Each envelope has a flyer inside with additional information. If you are missing something in your package, please contact SchoolPictures.com directly. The phone number is 1-800-482-0321.

Retake day is on Wednesday, November 14th. Pictures will be taken in the morning.

Book Fair

Come join us in the Enchanted Forest Book Fair! Morning Sales will take place from November 12-15th from 9:10 – 9:30 a.m. With permission from teachers students will go down to the media center for the book fair. Parents please help your child know how much money they are bringing, it will help us get them through the line & back to class. We are open during Conferences so please stop by! November 13th, 1:00-8:00 p.m.

Car Loop Parking Lot Changes

Thank you to everyone for not parking in our parking spots located in the drop off loop from 3:45pm-4:10pm. We are blocking off those spots during that time to ensure the safety of our students. As you all know pick-up time is extremely busy and we have had several incidents where cars have almost collided due to cars backing out of the parking spots during pick-up time. Additionally, we have had close encounters with students almost being hit crossing over to the parking spots during dismissal. We ask that you please park in our parking lot if you need to exit your car to pick up your child at the end of the school day. Contact me if you have any questions regarding changes during dismissal. Thank you for your understanding.

VO Flags

One of the things that makes our building so special is our diverse student population--we have families in our community who come from all over the world! To celebrate our global diversity we have hung flags in our cafeteria that represent many of the countries of our VO families. As a gift from VO retirees we were given flags of the following countries: Israel, India, England, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Nigeria, South Korea, China, and USA. Thank you to our parents who have also donated the following flags: Poland, Singapore, Japan, Germany, Finland, Ireland, Nepal, Greece, Pakistan, Uruguay, Ecuador, Portugal, Spain, Central African Republic, South Africa, Wales, Iceland, Australia, and Armenia. If you would like to purchase a flag of your country of origin or to represent one of the many nationalities of our school please visit Amazon and search for an ANLEY 3x5 flag: VO Flags

Before purchasing and donating the flag to our school’s collection please contact me or one of our secretaries with the flag information so we can make sure that another family has not already ordered the same flag.

Playworks

Village Oaks & Orchard Hills Elementary were the first two elementary schools in NCSD to become part of the Play movement and make play a priority with Playworks in the 2017-2018 school year! This year all NCSD elementary schools will partner with Playworks to enhance the learning experiences for students throughout the district. Playworks is the leading nonprofit in Michigan and nationally using play to transform schools. A Playworks recess creates a place for every kid on the playground to feel included, be active, and build valuable social and emotional skills. Please click on the link below and read the attached Playworks article to learn more about our partnership and Patrice our Playworks Coach!
