SEL Newsletter

May 14, 2021

Hello, RMS Families!

Among all the celebrations, May is also Mental Health Awareness Month. The National Alliance on Mental Illness slogan for Mental Health Month is: You Are Not Alone. This motto resonates with our philosophy and practice, as our role as the SEL Team is to support all students/families and teachers/staff as we navigate experiences surrounding social emotional and mental health. The resources in this newsletter, a video for parents/guardians from Harvard discussing Early Childhood Mental Health and a read aloud of the book "A Little Spot of Feelings" are just two of many resources available to increase knowledge and awareness around emotional wellness. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you would like more information or resources!

The end of the year is quickly approaching and, in keeping with tradition, students have the opportunity to participate in the annual "ABC Countdown." The calendar is attached below; participation is optional and we're looking forward to seeing our students get creative and have some fun!

Lastly, over the next week the RMS Elementary Ambassadors are facilitating a food drive to support families in our community and neighboring communities. There are collection boxes in the front and back lobbies for non-perishable food donations (i.e. soups, tuna skillet dinners, peanut butter, pasta, pasta sauce, ramen noodles etc.) that will be donated to Martha's Pantry in New Bedford. If everyone, staff and students, brings in one non-perishable item we will have 500 food items to donate to Martha's Pantry! This is a great way of demonstrating Empathy, which is part of our CARES motto.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to a member of the SEL Team at rmsselteam@oldrochester.org, or by calling 508-763-2049, if you have any questions, concerns, feedback or would like to discuss how we can best support your child(ren) and family. Thanks!
