Dear Parents & Caregivers,

Spring is in the air and April offers our children so many chances to get out and play! With Spring Break from April 1st-5th and days off on April 19th and 22nd, there are plenty of days off from school to experience the improving weather and more plentiful sunshine.

The Milne Grove faculty has been working on mindfulness and mindset with your children throughout the year. if you have a minute to stop and enjoy the rays of sunshine or to savor a leisurely meal - you can join your child in focusing on the good and remain in the moment (and living the principles of mindfulness). In a world of 24/7 communication and what feels like constant demands and stimulation - stealing a few moments to just be present can do an incredible amount to reduce our children's anxiety and restore balance to our hectic lives. I sincerely hope you find some peaceful and joyous moments this April.

Attention 3rd Grade Parents & Caregivers:

Third grade is a big academic year for many reasons. From learning independence to preparing for the transition to Kelvin Grove, students rise to the challenge of many new experiences in third grade. One of these new experiences is participating in statewide testing, known as IAR or Illinois Assessment of Readiness (formerly PARCC), for the first time. Students in third grade will participate in five separate standardized test sessions (60-75 minutes each) after we return from spring break. The third grade team has designated April 11, 12, 15, 16, and 17 as our testing dates. The state testing window runs from March 11th through April 26th, so it is very important that all vacations and absences are scheduled in advance in order to ensure each child participates in all 5 test sessions and/or schedules make up days.

At Milne Grove School, we remain committed to educating the whole child; this includes the academic, physical, and emotional realms. Each day, we focus on educating children who are both academically successful, emotionally resilient, and physically strong. Our staff understands that there is no single test that can accurately measure the true potential of your child; however, we do count on the IAR assessment data to determine if our curriculum is aligned with other educational institutions. It is our job to do everything in our power to prepare our learners and ensure that they are competitive with their peers - in Lockport, through Illinois, and across the country. We analyze the IAR data along with classroom performance, MAP benchmarking data, and progress monitoring data to determine the effectiveness of our instruction. We also revise our curriculum and plan intervention services based on the information we collect.

The teachers and I are asking for your partnership in making sure your child is at school AND that they are ready for this extra responsibility. How can you help? Many parents want to know what they can do to make this experience successful for their child. First and foremost, please let your child know that you are proud of him or her and that you are confident that he or she will do their best!!! Other helpful tips include:

  • Make sure that your child gets a good night sleep before each testing date.

  • Make sure your child eats a nutritious breakfast before going to school.

  • Try to schedule all doctor appointments, etc. outside of the testing week. If your child is ill or otherwise can’t attend school due to an emergency or tardiness on one or more of the assessment dates, he or she will be given a make-up testing date.

  • Try to ensure that your child comes to school each day of testing with a positive attitude.

Attendance Notes:

If your child is going to be absent or tardy , we would like to remind you to call the district attendance line to report absences by 9am. If you would like to request homework, you should do so in that message and indicate whether you will pick it up or wish for it to be sent home with another student.

Supervision at the morning arrival begins at 8:20am; please make sure your child DOES NOT arrive before adult supervision begins.

Notes From the Nurse

Importance of Sleep for children.

Kids ages 6 to 9 require about 10 hours of sleep a night. Lack of sleep for kids can cause irritable or hyper types of behavior and can also make many conditions worse. School work suffers because of an inability to concentrate due to the lack of sleep.

Bedtime difficulties can arise at this age from a child's need for private time with parents, without siblings around. Try to make a little private time just before bedtime and use it to share confidences and have small discussions, which will also prepare your child for sleep. develop calming down routines at least 30 minutes before bed time. If you have a television in your child’s room, remove it or turn it off before tucking your child in so they get the clear message it is time for sleep. Video games and other handheld devices are not calming and should never be used to get a child to sleep. Try reading a book with your child or having them read to you.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

You probably heard it from your own parents: But now you're the one saying it — to your sleepy, frazzled, grumpy kids, who insist "I'm not hungry" as you try to get everyone fed and moving in the morning.

Why Bother With Breakfast?

The purpose of breakfast is to give the body the refueling it needs after going without food for 8 to 12 hours during sleep. Kids who eat breakfast tend to eat healthier overall and are more likely to participate in physical activities. Skipping breakfast can make kids feel tired, restless, or irritable. Their mood and energy can drop by midmorning if they don't eat at least a small morning meal. Breakfast also can help keep kids' weight in check. Breakfast kick-starts the body's metabolism, the process by which the body converts the fuel in food to energy. And when the metabolism gets moving, the body starts burning calories.

Breakfast Brain Power

It's important for kids to have breakfast every day, but what they eat in the morning is crucial too. Choosing breakfast foods that are rich in whole grains, fiber, and protein while low in added sugar may boost kids' attention span, concentration, and memory — which they need to learn in school.

Research also has shown that kids who eat breakfast get fiber, calcium, and other important nutrients. They also tend to keep their weight under control, have lower blood cholesterol levels and fewer absences from school, and make fewer trips to the school nurse with stomach complaints related to hunger.

What not to serve for breakfast is important too. Sure, toaster pastries and some breakfast bars are portable, easy, and appealing to kids. But many have no more nutritional value than a candy bar and are high in sugar and calories. Read the nutrition labels carefully before you toss these breakfast bars and pastries into your shopping cart.

Providing enough time for sleep and a nutritious breakfast is the best way to help your child have a great start to each day.

Physical Education Feats

Students participated in many different games, activities and units in the month of March. We have continued to participate in new activities and games on Work Out Wednesday’s and Fun Friday’s.

In the month of April and with the start of Spring, I am hoping students will get the chance to enjoy some time outside! Students will get the chance to start new units including our much anticipated Dance unit. Family Dance night will be coming in May!

Students had the option of taking home a Spring Break Activity Bingo Card! Students can fill out their bingo cards with activities they have completed at home or on vacation while on Spring Break.

  • Please continue reading with your child at home to help them grow in fluency and comprehension. Additionally, assist your child with the weekly vocabulary and spelling words.


  • Please continue to have your child practice his/her addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Additionally, thank you for assisting your child with the chapter vocabulary words. End of the year units of study are measurement, area & perimeter, and geometry.


  • Currently third graders are studying animal adaptations with an emphasis on migration, camouflage, hibernation, and mimicry.

Social Studies:

  • Third grade students are working on a Lockport History Unit that includes learning about the Potawatomi and city founders and landmarks. Thank you for your continued assistance with unit vocabulary.


  • As we approach the end of the year, there will be a few field trips and activities coming up. Please be sure to check your student’s folder every night to make sure forms are returned on time.

Language Arts- We will be reading both nonfiction and fiction stories. Students will be learning how to use text features (captions, headings, diagrams, labels) to learn information. As you listen to your child read, continue to ask questions that prompt them to look back to the text for evidence. This will help them to think critically, and use text features as they answer.

Social Studies- The next chapter will be, Our Nation Past and Present. Students will learn about America's early settlers, how people’s lives and technology have changed from the past, and American heroes.

Science- We will begin our Life Science unit. Students will compare plants and animals in different habitats, and learn how their relationship within a habitat helps provide food, water, and shelter for the other. We will also discuss how plant and animal adaptations help them to survive in their habitat.

Math- Students will continue to practice subtraction facts. Students will learn measurement using inches and centimeters.

The kindergarten students are enjoying our author study of Dr. Seuss. We have read many of his stories, and have gotten very good at naming and writing rhyming words. Please reinforce the concept of rhyming at home this month. One way is to find the rhyming words in your child’s word box. You could then brainstorm more…nonsense words are great too…that was Dr. Seuss’ specialty!! The Lockport Library has a huge collection of his books if you are interested in continuing our author study at home.

In Math we have been working with addition and subtraction facts to 10. We have used many different kinds of manipulatives to support our creation of number sentences. Keep up the practice of those math facts!

The students are continuing to practice writing sentences independently. They can use the sight words they know along with their “kindergarten writing.” Each time a sentence is written they check to make sure it begins with a capital letter, ends with punctuation, and there are spaces between their words. The students are so proud of their sentence writing!

April is for Autism Awareness!

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability, characterized in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, communication and repetitive behaviors. People with ASD may communicate, interact, behave, and learn differently from most other people. Each individual with autism is unique. Many people with ASD have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music, and academic skills. Some may have an intellectual disability while others have normal to above average intelligence. Some persons with ASD may require significant help in their daily lives while others can live independently.

In April, many families, communities, and organizations celebrate National Autism Awareness Month to raise awareness about autism and promote advocacy for people with ASD. Understanding the signs and basic facts about autism is the first step to awareness.

The signs of ASD begin early during childhood and typically last throughout the person's life. Some signs include:

  • No babbling or gesturing by 12 months

  • Not saying single words by 16 months

  • Not pointing to objects to show interest/not looking at objects when another person points to them

  • Avoiding eye contact

  • Repeating or echoing words or phrases in place of normal language

  • Repeating actions over and over again

  • Having trouble adapting when a routine changes

  • Having unusual reactions to the way things smell, taste, look, feel, or sound

  • Having loss of any language or social skills they once exhibited

This Month’s Topic: Managing Behavior When Things Go Wrong

1. Choose your battles wisely. A wise rule of thumb is to allow 90 percent of your child’s behaviors to slip by and comment only on the 10 percent that genuinely matter to you. This helps to ensure the continuation of a healthy relationship.

2. If you are irritated or angry, allow the initial flush of emotion to pass. If your child is showing behaviors that are difficult to control, the last thing that will help the situation is for the parent to demonstrate the same behavior.

3. Engage eye contact and use a slow, low, controlled voice.

4. Use your child’s name, briefly state the difficulty, and remember it is fine to begin by saying… “Susan, I am disappointed... It would make be happy if you...”

5. Provide two clear choices that will fix the problem. Use as few words as possible to state the negative consequence you will use if the child chooses to continue with the behavior. Ask the child to think about it and make the best choice, then walk away.

6. Praise your child when he or she responds positively. Keep giving positive reinforcement to highlight any great behaviors you see!

Currently, all kindergarten through third grade students have almost completed their unit on watercolor and painting. We will be concluding the year with ceramic sculpture. All students focused on joinery and basic hand-built techniques for construction. Students also experimented with subtractive elements such as texture to create interesting effects on the surface of the clay. As a final step, students will painted their sculptures in various color schemes.

All students will also be drawing outside as we experience the warm weather. We will be observing nature, and drawing what we see, all around us – like Claude Monet. Students will also learn about artists who use nature as inspiration, like Andy Goldsworthy. We will also discuss some basic sketching techniques.

Thank you to all students, parents, teachers, administration and staff for all your support of the arts throughout the year. It is with your patience and understanding that all our special projects and all good things in art are possible.

March has been officially designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation.

MIOSM® began as a single statewide celebration in 1973, and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and then in 1985 to become a month long celebration of school music. The purpose of MIOSM® is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that schools is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM® is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.

5 – 3rd Grade Recorder students performed mini concert before school for students.

6 – Our 1st – 3rd grade music students are using the 14 computers in the MG Music lab. The students are using the Music Maestro International music software program to learn music theory. The program tracks and scores their progress until they graduate from 8th grade. The students take turns every other week using the computers and playing the Orff instruments.

7 – FREE RECORDER CLUB (for All 3rd Graders) : Wednesdays from 8:05-8:30 am. Plus, advanced recorder students will earn special recorder award during the recorder concert for parents May 16. Have your child practice at home and come prepared to pass all recorder assignments each week so he/she will receive a recorder award. Ring the MG Main Door buzzer at 8:05 am to come in and earn recorder stickers. If you pass the recorder lesson, you may then use the music computers to play Music Maestro (computer software for music theory and listening).

8 – FOR SALE MUSIC FUNDRAISER: 4 Tervis Hornet Tumblers @ $20, 120 Hornet Magnets @ $5, and 50 Hornet Fathead Stickers @ $5. Please help us to sell all of these so we may purchase instruments, equipment, and supplies for all K-8 music students in Milne & Kelvin Grove Schools.

9 – M. May 13 (6:30 pm) – All students in Grades 4,5, KG Chorus, and a few selected students in grades 6-8 will present the spring concert “Disney On Stage” in the KG Finelli (small) gym (enter door #1). Admission is FREE and open to the public. This year students in grades 6-8 may perform in this concert if they return the permission slip and make all rehearsals scheduled after school on Tuesdays & Fridays. Watch for the web for details.
