Principal's Message

Dear Hallinan Families,

It's wonderful to be able to enjoy some of our Hallinan traditions once again - including Field Trips and STEAM Night!

Our 5th Graders went on a field trip to BizTown last Friday. At BizTown, students learned the intricacies of jobs within a simulated economy and managed familiar organizations such as Key Bank, Fred Meyer, and the Oregon Humane Society. They also had the opportunity to be members of the community and vote. What a great field trip to reinforce how important RESPONSIBILITY is. As our students returned to Hallinan it was a treat to hear them joyfully talk about their experience. I've included a couple photos below and even more photos here. Thank you to our staff and volunteers that helped make this trip possible!

If you and your family are looking for something fun and educational to do tonight, please stop by the Hallinan STEAM Night between 5:30 and 7 pm. Our teachers have lots of fun activities planned including dice games, an egg drop challenge, dominoes, robots, flight and much more. You can also learn about our PTO sponsored Robotics Team. And, while you are here, please stop by the Lost and Found which is located in the hallway going toward 1st and 2nd Grade. We have lots of items that will be donated on 4/29 if they are still here.

Hope to see you at STEAM Night!

Melissa Griffiths

COVID-19 Reported Case Update

The LOSD COVID-19 Dashboard is up to date with the number of staff and students who have reported to LOSD testing positive for COVID-19, regardless of school exposure. At Hallinan, as of 12 pm on 4/28, we have 3 cases reported in the last week. With any potential exposure, people are advised to watch for illness symptoms and follow Oregon Health Authority COVID-19 exclusion procedures. Please contact District Nurses, Ann Nelson at nelsona@loswego.k12.or.us and Nikki Retzlaff at retzlafn@loswego.k12.or.us if your student has tested positive for COVID-19.

Stay Home When Ill & Test for COVID-19

2022-23 Verification

Beginning April 29, LOSD needs parents/guardians of all students enrolled for the 2022-23 school year to log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab. This benefits both families and schools by:

  • Ensuring that schools have accurate information to reach parents and other contacts in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Verification is important even if your address or contact information has not changed over the past year because the school may have incorrect information from a previous year.
  • Confirming parent email addresses for Google Classroom and other applications to participate in your student's learning.
  • Enabling distribution of key information in the district's K-12 Family Handbook.

If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." For assistance with the verification process, refer to the user guide on the LOSD website. If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account, or need assistance, please contact the office staff (contact information at the bottom of the newsletter).

i-Ready Spring Assessment

Soon, elementary students in Lake Oswego will complete two online i-Ready assessments in class. One is for math and the other is for reading. As you know, i-Ready is a program that helps us determine your child’s strengths and areas for future growth. This is the third of three i-Ready diagnostic assessments we give each year, and the results will be shared with parents before the summer break. For kindergartners, this will be their second i-Ready assessment.

OSAS Schedule and Reminders

Oregon State Assessment will take place in April and May, refer to the Save the Date section above and chart below for details. Teachers will also be sending out information in their newsletters.

Prepare your student for testing by ensuring:

  • They are well rested
  • Have healthy breakfast, lunch and snack options
  • CHARGED chromebook
  • Encouragement - we believe in them!

If a student has a smartphone or watch, these will need to be kept in backpacks during testing as access to them creates an impropriety, per state assessment regulations.

Oregon State Assessment Opt-Out Form

Every year, Oregon students take assessments to meet federal requirements. The purpose of these assessments is to provide data that schools can use to ensure each and every child is on track and achieving learning goals.

State law requires us to inform you that a form is available from the State Department of Education that allows you to opt your child out of the math and English Language Arts assessments for the current school year. Should you wish to opt out your child, fill out the form and submit it to the main office at your child’s school. Please note the submission deadlines listed on the form. Meeting the deadline will help the school with planning and preparation. If you wish your child not to participate in the science assessment for grades 5, 8, and 11, submit this request in writing to the principal of your child's school.

If you have questions or want more information about state assessments, please contact your child’s principal or teacher(s).

Click here for opt-out form for Math and English Language Arts.

2022-23 Registration

Registration for the 2022-23 school year (all grade levels) is open! This is for new students who have never enrolled in Lake Oswego before and for returning students who are not currently enrolled but will re-enroll for next year. Registration is online through ParentVUE. Parents do not need to register students for 2022-23 who are currently attending during the 2021- 22 school year. Information about registration, including Spanish Immersion, can be found here.

Families of students who will be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2022 can find information about Kindergarten, including how to register, on the Hallinan Kinder Counts pre-recorded video on the Hallinan website. The lottery registration deadline is Friday, 4/29. If Hallinan has more age-eligible registered kindergarten students than capacity, the District will conduct a lottery. Additional information can be found here.
