GARDEN OF LEARNING-October 2nd
DIGGING INTO ACADEMICS
We learned about Apples. ( life cycle, seasons, tastes, apple dishes, etc)
We made apple sauce and tasted 3 kinds of apples. We graphed our favorites.
We practiced short i patterns...ig id in.
We started an addition chapter.
We learned to write an opinion, narrative and informational piece about apples.
We learned about Johnny Apple Seed. Happy Birthday Johnny ...September 26th.
We read Miss Jill and Big Rigs.
We learned about producers and consumers.
We learned about where milk comes from and wrote facts about cows.
Digging Deeper
We will explore the farm and learn about farm animals, producers and consumers.
We will read Get Up Rick, Pick a Sack,One Red Rooster and many other Farm Animal Books.
We will learn about words with ick and ack words.
We will learn to classify and categorize.
We will write informational pieces about farm animals.
We will practice addition strategies.
We will practice writing sentences distinguishing between the naming part and telling part of a sentence.
We will summarize and learn about story elements...characters, setting, events, beginning, middle, end.

23rd field trip to Savidge Farm
Over the next month our first grades will be learning about the farm, pumpkins, and fall. We have planned a field trip and a special center day to supplement these units.
On October 9th we will make “MOOOstaches “ with Nutrition Inc.
On Friday, October 23rd , the first grade classes will be taking a field trip to Savidge Farm. Students will get to rotate through several stations as they learn about life on the farm including a hay ride to the pumpkin patch. Each student will also bring home a pumpkin. The PTO will be covering the cost of the buses and the $5.00 admission cost. Please sign and return the permission slip to school ASAP.
Each classroom will need two chaperones with clearances
for the trip. Please check the box at the bottom of your child’s permission slips if you are interested. Students are asked to please wear their blue and white or Shoemaker t-shirts, sneakers, and a jacket. Students are also asked to please bring a disposable bagged lunch with a drink to each of these field trips. Thank you!!
TURTLE TALK:
- PLEASE look for the permission slip for Savidge Farms. Please sign and return ASAP. We will need 2 volunteers with clearances.
- Please remind first graders to keep their Vocabulary and Little Reader Folders at home until they are complete. I'd suggest you keep the old Little Readers and any close reading passages in a small basket, folder or box so students can go back and read them again.
- Pancake breakfast is tomorrow.... I hope to see you there! Did you sign up to go to PTO Applebees Flap Jack Fundraiser?...you can find the info on the Shoemaker or PTO sites.
- ATTENTION PARENTS: Our First Graders will be performing 1 song at the Mustang Meeting on October 9th at 2:00. All parents are welcome!
FARM, FALL, AND PUMPKIN CENTERS
We are looking for...
1. volunteers with clearance to help 9:15-10:45 and 1:00-2:00
2. pumpkin or gourd donations to weigh, measure, etc.
3. any farm animals that could be brought to school. (Does anyone have any connections???)

Students receive instruction in a small group setting to build sight vocabulary, phonics skills and reading strategies learned to help them become successful readers.

Students receive instruction in phonics and reading strategies to
help them be successful readers and build fluency.
___ Phonics
Students receive instruction reinforcing phonics skills with a heavy emphasis on reading words in context to help them become successful readers.
___Strategic Intervention
Students receive practice in sight words, phonics and reading skills to reinforce skills taught in the classroom.
___Sight Words
Students receive practice in reading passages with emphasis on sight word vocabulary in context to build reading fluency.
___Enrichment
Students receive instruction in enrichment with emphasis on higher level thinking skills, and reading and writing skills to improve comprehension with heavy emphasis on nonfiction stories.

HOMEWORK
For those students who are reading more fluently...please utilize RAZKIDS at home and have students read 1 or 2 books from the BOOKROOM each nite to help build their fluency and vocabulary. I am currently assessing DRA levels and will send info home soon.
Spell City is also a great way to practice phonics skills at home. Thanks a bunch!!

KINDNESS KORNER
Please look for our KIndness Flowers...students are asked to perform acts of kindness, record on the flower, color, cut out and return the flower for our kindness Garden.
We will be making seed medallions for the elderly this month.
