Weekly Tech Update 3/15 to 3/19

Brackets are In!

The brackets have been submitted and the most popular tools for collaboration, communication, creative thinking, and critical thinking are being tabulated. Stay tuned. There will be a poll next week to help determine the winner. Thanks to all who participated.

GoGuardian and Groups

Not too long ago, GoGuardian released an update that allows you to create groups from within our classes. We have seen some creative uses of this update! However, we have learned that you can not send an announcement to a specific group. If you send an announcement it will go to the entire class. Not a deal-breaker, but it would have been convenient if you could send announcements to a group. I recently emailed GoGuardian and this is the 'Google-ish' reply I received from them: "At this time, sending announcements to specific groups is not a feature. If you have an idea to make the program work better for you, please share your idea at ideas.goguardian.com. Many of the features that you see in GoGuardian today are inspired by ideas submitted by our awesome teachers and admins."

So I say, as we did with Google, let's flood the suggestion box with the feature to send announcements to specific groups. The direct link to the 'suggestion box' is above.

Photo Vaults & Fake Calculators

Not sure if anyone allows students to use their phones as calculators in class, but you may want to be aware of this. There are several apps out there that double as photo vaults. Although the apps appear to be legit at quick glance, you can spot the differences if you look closer. The apps, available on iOS and Android, hide photos that they don't want others to see on their phones and removes those photos from their photo library. I AM NOT ADVISING YOU TO SEARCH A STUDENTS PHONE. Just making you aware, be cautious, and the schools have enough calculators if you need some.

Virtual STEAM Faire Kicks Off This Week

The virtual STEAM Faire kicks off this week. Lisa Blank and her STEAM Team have put a lot of work into these great showcases, opportunities, and exhibits. Take a minute or two and make sure you check it out. Here is a link to the site.

Congrats To These Movie Buffs

Congratulations to these movie buffs who solved the emoji movie title puzzles. One Team even spent the time to came up with 10 alternative answers to the emoji puzzle. The creativity award definitely goes to Team Fairness/Responsibility. Kudos and well done!

It Is What It Is and It Was What It Was

I know it doesn't seem possible, but there are roughly 15 weeks left. It isn't too early to start thinking about some end-of-the-year creations. This is surely one of those years that we will never forget and hopefully won't have to repeat in our lifetime.

If you are looking for some tools to curate some memories from this past year for your students, here are two great resources to consider: Book Creator and Slides Mania. Click on either one for examples of what some other educators have done or created in the past.

Get Stuff Done Club & InstaStrategies

The Get Stuff Done Club will hold two, one-hour zoom sessions, every Wednesday from 12 to 1 and then 1 to 2. If you can not attend at those times, the sessions will be recorded and uploaded to the Empower site. Every Wednesday will be a quick demonstration of an educational strategy from one of four popular educational books. The format of each session will be a quick demo (15 minutes or less) followed by Q & A and collaboration time.

1st Wednesday of the Month - Feel The Rush (EDrenanline Rush)

2nd Wednesday of the Month - Don't Kill the Wonder (Ditch That Textbook)

3rd Wednesday of the Month - What's the Protocol? (EDUProtocols)

4th Wednesday of the Month - What's the Play Coach? (DL Playbook)

To join the meeting this Wednesday, click HERE for the 12 o'clock session or HERE for the 1 o'clock session, or email me and I will send you the Zoom link directly. If you would like, you can register for each session below, and I will email you the link on Wednesday so that you don't have to search very far for links. See registration buttons below.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you are signed in with your district Zoom account or you will not be admitted from the waiting room. Sorry, I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Join The InstaStragies Google Classrom

Feel free to join the InstaStrategies classroom. All the resources shared during the InstaStragies are posted here.

Would you Mind Sharing?

It seems like it's been a year, but we made it through the first 6 months! I have been fortunate to witness colleagues finding their stride and using strategies and techniques that have helped with the start of this unprecedented school year. However, there are colleagues that could use some ideas on strategies and techniques that could help in their transition to this style of hybrid/remote learning. If you are willing to share, please click on the Google Form below so we can compile some strategies that have been effective for you. Just drop a quick note in the Google Form and I will be in touch. THANK YOU!!!

Feedback Welcomed and Encouraged
