THE JAYHAWK BLAST
JHS Bulletin - Volume I, Issue 4, 11/22/2019
A Message From The Co-Principals
Good Afternoon and Happy Friday,
We are happy to release the fourth issue of the Jayhawk Blast. It has been a spirited and exciting few weeks at JHS. Some highlights include our Boys Varsity Soccer Team winning the State Championship, our Winter Orchestra and Chorus Concert, a team of Science Research students being names Regional Finalists for the Lexus EcoChallenge, the premier of the student production of "The Night I Died at the Palace Theater", and the release of our quarter 1 grades.
This issue of the Jayhawk Blast is filled with important information, key reminders, highlights from the athletic field, the classroom and the stage. It also includes opportunities for parents to stay connected through the PTSA. In the "Parent Resource" section we included an eye-opening article written by a NYC HS student who shares his addiction to vaping. Please spend some extra time going through the newsletter and clicking on all of the links.
Finally, take note of the upcoming events and important deadlines. Please remember that Parent-Teacher conferences are next Tuesday and Wednesday (with Wednesday being a non-attendance day for students). Tuesday meetings are by teacher appointment only (emails already were sent to invited parents) and Wednesday is open session for any and all parents to come and meet with the teachers.
We wish everyone a wonderful weekend and in looking ahead, a Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Sincerely,
Joan Rosenberg and David Cohen

HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
On November 13 the JHS Chorus, 9th & 10th Grade Orchestra as well as the 11th & 12th grade Orchestra treated the audience to spectacular concert. Congratulations to all of the student performers as well as Mr. Michael Lee, Orchestra Conductor and Mr. Ronald Verderber, Chorus Conductor!!
Below is a video highlight for each ensemble!
The Creative Writing students of English teachers Heather McGee and Suzanne Valenza practiced writing sensory imagery while experiencing the preparation and enjoyment of butternut squash soup. The Linwood’s Executive Chef and owner Henry Freidank visited on Monday and treated everyone to the delectable cuisine. Chef Henry is the older brother of Heather McGee. Students will follow this experience by writing poems incorporating imagery of all five senses which will then become part of their digital portfolios.
On Friday, November 22, the JHS Chorus went to LIU Post to work closely with two Choral adjudicators from the university. They were joined by choral students from three other high schools. Each school had the opportunity to perform and received actionable feedback from the adjudicators. It was a powerful day and a wonderful opportunity for our students. Below is a video clip from one of their performances.
