summer learning
Dear Parents,
Welcome back! We hope you all had a wonderful summer with your children. We are excited to see them back at Dunning.
If your children particpated in the summer learning challenge by recording their reading on our tracking sheet, please make sure they turn it in to their classroom teachers by FRIDAY, September 6th.
If you have any questions about the tracking sheet or the summer learning, feel free to reach out to Brett (bberkman@framingham.k12,ma.us) or Lauren (lwalton33@framingham.k12.ma.us). Thanks so much!

what is social emotional learning (SEL)?
Social Emotional Learning is an important part of development for all students. This learning fuels a student's ability to engage in the school day academically, socially and behaviorally. Framingham Public Schools is committed to making sure all students are provided with instruction to support their social emotional growth through strong programming in every school. At Dunning, these programs or systems are being implemented in our school day through:
- Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
- Restorative Practices
- Second Steps
- The Zones of Regulations
what is PBIS?
At Dunning, we are a community of learners and our goal is to promote positive behavior school-wide. Within our school, we have three Core Values, which are reinforced daily in all areas of the school:
- Responsible
- Respectful
- Ready to learn
Throughout the school day, we recognize and reward students demonstrating these core values through praise and positive reinforcement using our whole school Dunning Panda Paws and our positive Behavior Referral Form, "Why You're Awesome".
What is restorative practices?
Restorative Practices involve interventions when harm as happened as well as practices that help to prevent harm and conflict by creating a sense of belonging, safety and social responsibility within the school community. The underlying principal is that relationships are important. When an incident occurs, the focus is on the harm caused to the relationship and how to repair the relationships; rather than what rule has been broken and what consequence will be imposed.

READING ABOUT MATH
Lauren Walton, Math Coach
Picture books are a great way to introduce and review mathematical concepts in meaningful ways, spark curiosity in mathematics, and help build background knowledge to better understand how math is used in our daily lives.
We are working with our children to help them to understand math on a deeper level and we have come a long way from worksheets with isolated computation problems. Our learning is focused on math in context and real-world problem solving. Many argue that the “problems and solutions that children encounter in picture books are deeper and more nuanced than most of the word problems they encounter” (Alycia Zimmerman in her article Teaching Math with Picture Books, part 1). So not only can picture books help children visualize abstract concepts, but can help children work through problem solving in an engaging way and help them see math in a different way.
Here are just a couple of lists of books about math:
You can find these titles at your local library or even find a read aloud on YouTube! Share with us what you’re reading! lwalton33@framingham.k12.ma.us
