Message From Ms. Backer, Our Principal
I am overwhelmed by the support we have received from you. The emails and messages of encouragement have warmed our hearts and served as a valuable reminder that we are all in this together- and that we are always better when we work together. We are juggling a lot of decisions and need to work together to continue to support each other.
Our goal is to keep our students engaged and their brains active during this past week and during this upcoming week. The continuity of learning days that we are engaged in right now are not the same as Virtual Learning Days. Continuity of Learning is to support student learning during an extended closure so that when we return we can resume with as little lost time as possible. In addition, this is why students are getting feedback on their assignments rather than a proficiency level (AP, P, DP, N). Please do encourage your child to participate in these learning activities and discussion posts as much as possible. This will allow for them to stay apart of their classroom community and continue to give them a sense of routine.
Our teachers are working extremely hard to ensure that all of our families have all the instructional resources and supports that they need during this time. As an important reminder your child's teacher is available immediately during their office hours of 9-10. The purpose of these office hours is to answer questions students or parents may have about instructional tasks or resources. We understand that some questions or concerns might come up outside of these office hours. Our teachers will respond, however, please give them the 24 hour window just as if we were in school.
Again, my sincere appreciation to our entire community for working together to support our students during this extended school closure. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Math Reminders and Resources for families
Please remember that Redbird should be completed independently by your child. This is because RedBird is an adaptive program. We want to encourage students to use the instructional supports built into the program, so Redbird can adjust to the child’s needs.

Chromebook Information
- If you are having problems with a broken Chromebook or other device, you are now able to exchange it for a similar device at any of the schools currently serving as food distribution sites. A complete list is posted on our website. Please wipe the device with a disinfectant and bring the device and charger to one of those sites between 9 a.m. and noon, Monday through Friday. A VBCPS employee will inventory the broken device and provide a replacement.
- If you do not have internet access at home, please either complete this form or call (757) 263-1111 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can also contact Ms. Backer (Robyn.Backer@vbschools.com) so arrangements can be made for access to alternative learning materials.
Hour of Code
Computer science is super fun for kids, because it is creative and playful. Whether it’s solving a puzzle, coding art, or designing an app, computer science helps students learn by exploring rather than memorizing.
Computer science is foundational to all fields of study, this could be a unique chance to support your child in a fun new learning opportunity. With schools closed and tens of millions of students at home, Code.org is launching Code Break — a live weekly webcast where our team will teach your children at home while school is closed, and a weekly challenge to engage students of all abilities, even those without computers.
Let them teach your children:
- A weekly webcast, featuring our founder Hadi Partovi and special guests
- A weekly activity or challenge
- Options for beginners, experienced students, and even students without computers
It goes live March 25th! Click the link below and sign up with your email to receive each week's Code Break!
