Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
August 24, 2018
A Great Week!
It was a great week to be a Rocket..and to be in Room 9! We are really settling in and learning the routines and procedures of 3rd Grade. One thing we are really working on is TRANSITION TIMES between subject areas. We are very slow moving, which is normal for the beginning of the school year. We are working toward becoming faster, which helps us accomplish more during our short day! Be sure to ask your child how TRANSITION TALLIES are helping us with this process.
Be sure to sign your child's Assignment Notebook each night. We will talk more about homework at Meet the Teacher next Tuesday, August 28.
I placed the Scholastic Book order and expect the books to arrive next week or the following week. It's always exciting to see the students' faces when they see books on their desks upon arrival in Room 9 in the morning!
Mrs. Greene
Special Helper - Maddy
Maddy was a wonderful helper this week! Being the first helper of the year is always tough, but she "rocked it!" She has a sweet spirit and such a positive attitude about anything and everything we do in Room 9!
She tried her hand at creating a YouTube video highlighting a few activities that took place in Room 9. She asked Leah to help her. Be sure to watch it (see below). The sound quality is very poor, but we will work on it for next week!

Here is What is Planned for Next Week: August 27-31
We will take the Reading NWEA Test Monday, August 27 and Tuesday, August 28. We use the Reading test data to instruct your child at his/her instructional level of reading. Once the data from the test is received, I will print a copy for your child to keep in his/her data binder. We will analyze the data and create goals for growth.
Reading:
- Creating Reading Goals
- What is Reading Fluency?
- Reading Stamina
- Reading Logs
**Don't forget that I will give your child their FINAL SPELLING TEST of the year next Friday, August 31. Hopefully your child has spent some time learning/reviewing the words his/her personalized list that was sent home earlier this week. Starting after Labor Day, we will have a spelling test every two weeks, however, there will not be a list of words your child will memorize for the test. The test will be over words that we have worked on in class over a two week time-period.
Writing: Personal Narrative
- Planning - an important part of any story!
- Brainstorming ideas
- Writing Stamina
Social Studies: Understanding the Geography of the World
Your children should know the following (we have gone over these concepts MANY times in class each day):
- We live on Earth, NW Hemisphere, Continent of North America
- Equator and Prime Meridian (imaginary lines that divide the Earth into hemispheres)
- Seven Continents
- Five Oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, Southern
Math: Unit 1 - Math Tools, Time, and Multiplication
Next week we will work on the following skills:
- Number Lines and Rounding
- Finding Differences between numbers
- Time - Review
- Problem Solving using CUBES (Cubes is a strategy students use to help solve word problems)
Be sure to ask your child about BUBBLE GUM MULTIPLICATION MATH! We are learning our multiplication facts from 0-10. I send home a blue set of fact cards for your child to use at home to practice. This is not mandatory, but perhaps might be a useful tool. There is also a helpful website I have linked in Canvas (my math page) for your child to use for practice. We will test on the next level next Friday, August 31. There are 40 multiplication problems your child must solve in one minute to pass to the next level. We will talk more about this at Meet the Teacher.
WHEW...We are busy in 3rd Grade!
