During the month of December, our second-grade Oakside readers will continue to focus on their study of Bugs in their Ecosystems. The students will be working on one focus question each week. They will identify the main idea and key details in a text. They will be using graphic organizers to write their notes and information that will answer the focus question of each week. In addition, the students will identify the characteristics of a nonfiction text to support their ability to read a text with greater understanding. Be sure to ask your children about their research topic and what they’ve learned so far!
Grade 2: Mission 4: Add, Subtract, and Solve
Students will work on fluency in addition and subtraction up to 100. They will also build a conceptual understanding of adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers to 200 and will apply their skills when solving problems.
How you can help at home:
Continue to ask how many ones, tens, and hundreds are in numbers that you and your student come across.
Encourage your student to explain their mathematical thinking by drawing a diagram or picture that links to their addition and subtraction problems.

During the month of December, our third grade Oakside readers will continue to work on Unit 2 of the ARC Program. As the class explores Weather and Climate, the students will read, write, question, debate, and create knowledge together. The students will develop expertise on the topic of climate and weather. In addition, they will learn new vocabulary which will further support their new learning. The students will identify the characteristics of a nonfiction text in order to strengthen their ability to read a text with greater understanding. In addition, the students will be reading at least 30 minutes a day from self-selected texts, including texts on the topic they’re focusing their research on. The students will practice answering text-based response questions to improve their writing skills. Lastly, the students will analyze the central ideas or themes of a text and summarize the supporting details. Be sure to ask your children about their research topic and what they’ve learned so far!

Mathematics
Grade 3: Mission 3: Multiply and Divide Tricky Numbers
This mission goes deep into our learning about two related operations, multiplication and division. Students will practice their math facts to become fluent and will learn several strategies for multiplying and dividing numbers.
How you can help at home:
Continue to review multiplication and division facts with your child.
Help your student notice related math facts, e.g. 4 x 2 = 8, 4 x 20 = 80, 40 x 2 = 80
