Reading
We also talked about making predictions before and during reading.
Predicting before the story:
- use the title, picture, and blurb on the back. What clues are you getting?
- what might go wrong (problem) and how will the character work to fix it?(solution)
- does it remind you of another book or something else ? If so, do you think the character will try and solve the problem in a similar way? (making connections help us deepen our thinking)
Predicting while reading:
- is your prediction correct so far?
- what new information did you find out?
- After reading a couple of pages, now what are you thinking might happen?
- Do you think the character will learn a lesson by the end of the story?

Phonics
This week we worked on 3 important phonetic skills:
Skill 1- if a vowel is followed by one guardian consonant then the vowel is short. (fun, get, sun)
Skill 2- if a vowel is followed by two guardian consant then the vowel is short (jump, stand)
Skill 3- if a word ends in a vowel, the vowel is long (me, so)
I talked with the kids that these words and skills seem easy but will be important when they get into multi-syllabic words in reading and writing.
Science
- changes that are happening with the trees and the beautiful colors we are seeing
- what the animals are doing to prepare for winter
