Mrs. Lyons' First Grade Math, Science, Social Studies Class

Week 2 - August 24th -28th

We made it through our first week! This week we will begin our content lessons in math, science, and social studies. We will also continue with practicing rules and procedures as well as our discussion on what it means to do your personal best.

My class newsletters are full of pictures! I am a very visual person and I like to share a visual representation of what we are doing in the classroom! I also include links to any videos that we will be watching in the classroom to enrich our lessons as well as links to textbooks with reviews and game options to promote learning at home.

Due by Friday 8/28

Math 1.1-1.4

Science: Out in Nature

Social Studies: 10 Things About Me

Review Excel found in "Keep at Home" pocket and practice Rainbow Math. (Keep cards in backpack when not practicing. We will practice at school as well)

My homework pack will always have a copied label at the top with "LYONS" and the "DUE:" date. Please help your child complete his/her homework. I do give a grade for homework and it has to be complete and his/her best work for full credit. Links are provided in this newsletter to assist with homework if needed. Graded homework is returned with test papers.

Tests are at the end of each chapter or unit.
Lengths of each unit vary, so testing frequency will vary.

We will be spending a large part of our class time learning math! We will be talking about math strategies, what is expected, and how to become a math expert! I will scaffold learning by modeling a step by step process in the beginning with a goal of greater student independence as weeks progress. This is when we can move to a Guided Math system with whole group instruction, small group instruction and independent learning stations.

Social Studies

Our social studies lesson this week is a mini lesson daily on Families. When science lessons are large units, the social studies lessons are smaller. We will have a vocabulary word of the day as well as work in our Maps, Globes, and Graphs workbook.
