Dangerous Apps for Teens
Do You Recognize These Apps?
Ask.FM
This app uses a Q & A format in which people are encouraged to answer questions and can remain anonymous. This app (and website) is associated with some of the worst forms of bullying and harassment. Some of the material can also be sexually explicit.
Burn Note
This is a messaging app where all messages delete as soon as read. There is no evidence that a conversation took place. This app has lead to bullying.
After School
This app was designed to be accessible only for teens. It was designed for a place for teens to discuss sensitive issues without having to reveal their names. Similar to Yik Yak, it allows teens to post comments and images on message boards associated with high schools in the area. This is another site that has caused bullying and harassment.
How to Keep Your Teen Safe
Parents must stay educated as new apps and social media sites become available to teens. However, it is impossible for adults (parents & teachers) to stay on top of every new one. The most important thing to do is to communicate with our teens and teach them the importance of being safe online and being a good digital citizen.
