Open House Reminders - Please Read!
Dear Parents,
This conference is a celebration and sharing of your child’s school efforts and progress. Since both you and your child are relatively new at this, you will need to help your child through the process. Let your child set the pace. Encourage discussion. Don’t just race through the papers. You do not need to discuss each paper in detail. As your child shows you the papers, you may wish to choose two or three papers of different types on which to comment or ask questions. Ask questions or make positive comments, which show you are interested in the skill the paper shows your child was able to do, not what was wrong. (Example, “What does this mean?” “Can you show me how you did this?” or “I can see you have worked hard to learn this____.” Not, “You can do better than this, your work should be much neater…or How come you missed this? I know you can do this so what’s the right answer?”)
When commenting on written work, which demonstrates creativity, be a cheerleader. Remember this is a first grader just learning to apply skills independently. It is hard work to use the skills, be creative, and produce a perfect paper. Also remember that explaining the papers to you may not always be easy. If your child finds this difficult, just ask a few questions and move on. This is part of the learning process for you child.
Your child is developing academically and socially. There are spurts of growth as well as times of slow and steady progress. There are times of achievement and times of difficulty. Your encouragement and support is essential. This conference should be an opportunity for you to offer these to your child. Share in the pride of their learning!
We hope you each find this a valuable and enjoyable learning experience!
HELP! It's that time again...
It’s that time again! Allergies are starting back up, the flu/strep/common cold are all going around, and we are ALL OUT of tissues! If you have the time, I know our class would really appreciate tissue box donations. We have a lot of runny noses!!!
What Are We Learning?
Language Arts and Social Studies
This week we started a our new unit in language arts, social studies, and writer's workshop. We have been learning more about adjectives that compare, along with identifying cause and effect in literature. In social studies, our new unit focuses on comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences of the past, present, and future. In writer's workshop, we have started a new unit focusing on opinion writing. Students will be learning how to share their opinion through writing and support their opinion with reasons.
After Spring Break, we will continue to learn more about adjectives that compare along with reviewing capitalization and end mark usage. Students will be learning strategies to help them determine the what is important vs. what is not when they are reading a passage. They will then learn how to use this information to help them create questions about the text before, during, and after they read. In social studies, they will be comparing and contrasting ways of communication and transportation in the past vs. ways of communication and transportation currently.
