Happy New Year
After taking a short pause to let people get into their school-year routines, we will be bringing back some old favorites and embarking on new partnerships and programs for kids and families.
The American Library Association, recognizing the important role that public libraries can play in early literacy education, developed the Every Child Ready to Read @Your Library program. Last winter, we took the first step in that program and did a survey of local early literacy resources and needs. It turns out, there is a lot more our library could be doing to foster the habits and skills that kids and families need to be ready for school.
For better or worse, Kindergarten ain't what it used to be and we've made a commitment to become a free early education resource for families with young children. Our programs are no substitute for the excellent preschools we have locally, but they are a good choice for kids who aren't getting that kind of experience. One difference in our programs is that they are not drop-offs. Caregivers will be reading, singing, playing and creating along side their children, giving them an opportunity to learn some new things and meet each other. We're calling our program "Building Blocks" and we plan to be learning and building it up as we go.
For the older crowd, we are teaming up with the Greenwich Youth Center for "Fab Fridays". Three Fridays a month, starting September 16th, kids in grades 4-8 will get a chance to do art projects, hands-on science or maker space activities with some wonderful local educators. Since no kid program is complete without snacks, the participants will check in at the Youth Center for a snack before walking the short block to the library. When the fun and learning are over, parent pickup will be at the Youth Center. Spaces for these programs are limited, so preregistration is required.
Last, but not least, we will be following up on this summer's successful Teen Fandom night with more events lead by our wonderful colleague Michelle. Teens who know all about Harry Potter, are obsessed with Dr. Who or can't get enough of their favorite superheroes can come for some great discussions, fun games and -of course- yummy snacks.
And I almost forgot, LEGO club will start up again on Thursday, September 15th. It's a nice opportunity for kids to socialize and create in a relaxed atmosphere. We've got big Duplos as well, so even the littlest builders can join in.
We hope you can make the library part of your life this fall. We'd love to see you.
