From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
We have much to look forward in October beginning with We Run Cheongna on October 11th. CDS Middle School is excited for the opportunity once again to enjoy the autumn weather at the Cheongna Lake park for our annual fun run. A group of creative students in our National Junior Art Honors Society (NJAHS) spent time this week coming up with some excellent t-shirt designs for the event! Please remember that We Run Cheongna will be a half day for students and plan accordingly.
Also coming up, our 5th and 7th graders will expand their knowledge of Earth science on a field trip to the Seoul Botanical Gardens on October 10th. Meanwhile, the student council is already hard at work planning Halloween party activities that are sure to scare you!
Keep in mind that the KAIAC Swimming season is scheduled to begin Term 2 and will continue throughout the winter.
As Term 1 draws to an end, I hope all CDS students can maintain that positive beginning-of- the-year enthusiasm and continue doing their very best to learn and grow!
Have a great weekend!

Faculty In-Service Day
On Monday, September 23rd, CDS held its first faculty in-service day of the 2019-2020 academic year. During faculty in-service days teachers, staff, and administrators work together to find ways of improving teaching practice and boost student learning outcomes.
This week CDS had the honor of having an international education expert and speaker, Greg Curtis, to focus on curriculum development. Greg Curtis is an author and independent education consultant with more than 27 years of experience working worldwide leading curriculum revitalization, 21st-century learning, technology infusion, assessment shifts, and change initiatives. This was a fantastic opportunity to keep growing as teachers and keep moving CDS forward to ensure that our students are ready to excel and succeed in the 21st Century.
Happy Friday and have a great weekend!

Drama CC with Ms. Stant
After a long session of playwriting, they headed outside to enjoy the cool, fall air and practice some of their newly acquired Drama skills. The game "Splat" is used to teach complex and quick thinking skills while moving swiftly to avoid the penalty of elimination. The students had to remember several complicated rules and movements while playing the game with their friends. Today was just another fun afternoon with the Drama Club!

Tea Time with Mr. Baker - The 40 Book Challenge
As you will hear about endlessly from Mr. Baker, Grades 6 and 7 are participating in the 40 book challenge. Students have a say in how they can be assessed for each book they read. One way to show what you know is to sit down for a cup of tea and discussion about what you read.
This week, we had our first tea time assessment. Yuchien finished reading the classic To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee a couple of weeks ago and we finally found the time to sit down and talk about it. Mr. Baker enjoyed a cup of Earl Grey while Yuchien had a cup of brown rice & green tea. The discussion was based around the prejudice found in the book as well as the perspectives of the characters involved. Overall, it was a success!
