What motive is there to keeping messages secret?
The Americans did not win the war by out fighting. They won by out thinking and spying. They had to spy to stay a step ahead of the British.
What would have happened if spies weren't used?
If spies were not used, the Americans would have lost the war. They would not have had the supplies, training, or power to overcome the British.
Interesting facts
Invisible ink was composed of ferrous sulfate ( FeSO4)
John Honyman saved the army during winter when by bringing details about the the Hessians in Trenton.
To read the ink, an "F" meant fire and "A" meant acid.
Sometimes, messages would be buried in fields and someone would later could to retrieve it.
The Culper Spy Ring was located in New York lead by Benjamin Tallmadge
It was known as the most effective network of spies because it was located in New York when it was under British control.
