Sports: Girls' Play On Boys' Teams

By: Jonathan Failla

Imagine this scenario: Jenny, a 14 year old girl wishes to play on the girls' soccer team for her school. However, the school has to close the girls' team for financial reasons. Now there is only the boys' team and Jenny wants to try out. But the coach says "Sorry, no girls are allowed to play". Now Jenny can't play soccer, even though she loves the sport and is very good at it, all because of her gender. Girls should be allowed to play on boy teams to enhance their physical and mental health.

Most all girls' leagues do not receive as many resources as boys's leagues do. Usually whenever this happens, some girls will leave to join boys' teams. According to the text "Making An Informed Decision About Girls' Participation On Boys' Teams", "This leads to the second situation, wherein a talented female athlete may wish to play on the males' team in order to access better competitive opportunities, practice times, and so on." If the team doesn't have what the girl wants or needs to get better and improve, they should leave the girls' team for the boys'. Also, even though the girls' teams have less resources, it is still fun to play on. Playing on a girls' team, even with less opportunities and resources compared to the boys' teams, is still an exciting, challenging and fulfilling challenge. ("Making An Informed Decision About Girls' Participation On Boys' Teams") If they wish to stay on a girls' team for the challenge they obviously can. But usually most girls want better opportunities and resources to get better at the game.

"Research demonstrates that girls who participate with boys in youth sports are more resilient." ("Should My Daughter Play For A Girls' Team Or A Boys' Team") Once girls get the opportunity to play on boys' sports teams, they will become more resilient which means they will be able to recover quickly and become stronger. It is important to give opportunities to girls to play on all girls' teams as well as an opportunity to play on a boys' team if they choose to. Allowing girls the right and opportunity to compete on boys' teams does not prevent development, or growth, of girls' teams. ("Should My Daughter Play For A Girls' Team Or A Boys' Team") What this means is that if a girl wants to leave her league to join a boys' league, it won't affect the girls' league in any way. Also, according to the Women's Sport Foundation, if the teams and leagues were organized by size, the risks of playing would have nothing to do with gender and more to do with the coach and the child's abilities. If teams and leagues did this, gender won't have any impact on how they're organized and thus allowing girls to play on boys' teams.

Participating in exercise and sports enhanced the physical and mental health of both males and females. "Girls who are physically, mentally and emotionally stronger have a better change of competing in the classroom - or in the boardroom." (Driscall) By competing in sports, girls are able to get better grades and do better in school. When they compete with and against boys, they have a different competition and this helps the girls also to be able to do better in schools. Some independent studies have confirmed that girls who play sports score better on tests, are more likely to graduate from high school, to continue their education, and by doing this have a grater earning potential. (Driscall) And some more research has shown that girls who play with and against boys in sports are more resilient than girls who don't according to "Should My Daughter Play For A Girls' Team Or A Boys' Team."

Other people will say that, if anything, allowing girls to play on boys' teams will hurt the girl's physical and mental health. This statement is false and was never proven. There is no evidence that proves or shows that girls get hurt more than boys or are weaker than boys. Just because the person's gender may be different, doesn't mean that they get hurt more than the opposite gender.

Girls should, without a doubt, be allowed to play on boy teams in order to improve their physical and mental health. In some cases for a girl to get better at a sport, they need better resources. And most girl teams don't have the resources that they need. Therefore allowing girls to play on boys' teams should be allowed. Allowing girls to play on boys' teams will help a lot of girls and maybe even some boys. Help make this happen! Contact principals, parents and league administrators. Girls will improve their physical and mental health by getting what they need to improve.
