Superintendent's Message

Hello everyone and welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! It's hard to believe that we are already a full month into the school year! The Fall season is all around us; it's getting chillier; the leaves are starting to change color; and pumpkin spice seems to be everywhere you turn. Our students and staff have gotten used to their schedules and have their routines down pat! Personally, Fall is my favorite time of the year. It’s filled with NEW—a new school year, new opportunities, new programs, new facilities, new teachers, new school shoes, and even a new newsletter!

This month we had our first after-school professional development for all teaching staff. I had the opportunity to visit the groups as they worked alongside their colleagues. We are excited to share that we were able to differentiate our professional development for individual groups of teachers:

  • Our mental health team worked with behaviorist Kate Tuffy to develop their understanding of completing Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and creating Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
  • Our ENL (English as a New Language) teachers worked with a professional developer on a program called Imagine Learning. This program will be utilized with some of our students to focus on language and academic vocabulary. The program is adaptable and will differentiate according to students 'needs.
  • Our K-6 staff, which included all of our special education teachers, focused on our new social studies program. This was the first of 3 sessions. The focus for this session was introduction to the materials, platform and assessments, and showing teachers how to navigate the teacher’s manual, create groups and assign lessons.
  • Our Discovery Lab teachers worked with a professional developer from Model Schools (BOCES). The focus of their time was on production – how to video using a green screen and how to create podcasts.
  • Our speech therapists worked on a platform called the ASHA Learning Pass – they were able to choose webinars/workshops that were specific to their needs and their students.
  • Our specialty area teachers had the opportunity to take advantage of workshops specific to their area of expertise.
  • Our next after-school professional development day is today, October 20th, and we will follow the same format.
